Nani Lee Meadows, widow of Kui Lee, passed away yesterday.

Honolulu Star Bulletin Obituary

This one hits me particularly hard because the Naones (Nani's maiden name) long lived on the east coast. (Kui met Nani when he was working at the famed Hawaiian Room of the Lexington Hotel. Kui also wrote commercial jingles by day at the famed Brill Building - sitting in cubicles between Mark Murphy, Burt Bacharach, and Carole King.) Nani moved home long ago and lived in Ka`u with her second husband, but she visited New Jersey frequently to see her sister, Libby Bailey. So I have had the great privilege of performing with her at backyard jams and having her regale me with stories of the old days in Hawaiian entertainment.

She, too, will be sorely missed.

I remember seeing her and Kui performing. Kanaka Pete the bull of Bethel Street is one song that comes to mind. Also Ain't No Beeg Ting. Was good fun those days.

No'eau, eia au he mea pa'ani wale nō.
