Any out there with a little PC/web knowledge please offer some advice. All of a sudden, every time I get on the web I get web pages popping up at random. The computer even tries to access these web pages when the modem is not on. It's just a bunch of shopping stuff - cell phone - "buy a Macy's gift card" - a Lowes promotion - etc. I have virus and spyware software but it is not finding whatever is responsible for this maddening problem. Any suggestions? Know of any web-sites with forums where I might find answers?
Mahalo for any help.

You may have a root kit, a devious little program that spy scanners don't usually find. I had one and I couldn't get rid of it until I began searching for everything that popped up. This doesn't help, but you might try searching "root kit" and any other words you see in the pop-ups. These programs are the worst form of malware.

As I'm sitting here, writing this on my MAC, I'm thinking OMG Konabob's in for some s**t. Trust me, they don't understand.
Now, speaking from my PC (only at work) side. Before you System Restore, you might want to back up critical files. If you truly have to go the the System level, you should have an IT person help you.

woof!!!!!!!!!!!

Frankly, I don't get it. At large user concentrations, like businesses or universities, all are under equal attack. As your cartoon shows, Dave.
Macs getting more attractive means Macs get more attacks, especially with their last few OS *total* Screwups. It is the front line firewalls and user behavior that protects the user. I have 2 firewalls in my home and I never do anything silly. At Yale, where Sarah works (on Macs), and I used to (on *everything*), nobody gets evil, because of systemic hygiene. You do that at home and you won't get any disease either. However, just in case, I have a Ubuntu disk poised and ready to go. Free.
If the `puter is as important to you as your car, you practice defensive driving. The most screwy thing that has ever happened to me is that certain outrageous people have confused my email address with that of one of their friends, and, so, I get stupendously amusing emails about 1) legal, or semilegal, activities of crazoid lawyers and 2) very un-PC pix and vids, that I allow through, and Sarah and I dissolve in howls of laughter. The originally intended recipient never gets the email, but I do. I coulda gotten about $400k once if I had responded to one email in a law suit involving an inheritance squabble. Maybe I shoulda. But Madge, the lawyer, was so out of it, that I couldn't bear to dig her grave. And, old Wayne, who must be a sysadmin in Fla. spends his entire day hunting for spicy, funny vids.
Crazy world, just be sensible.
Recovery is not such a problem if you back up regularly. I back up on 3 different devices regularly, and can get back to within the last hour of data preservation. Nobody should care about the OS, `cause you just reload it. takes a bit of time, but no loss. It is your personal data that counts. You know where that is, right? If not, take up knitting.
