Standing poised and center stage in front of Aaron J. Sala on piano, Byran Tolentino on ukulele, Jeff Peterson on guitar with Steve Jones holding down the line with his upright bass, Raiatea Helm just enthralled the packed house at the Herbst Theatre last night.

Magnificent hula was provided by Patrick Makuakane's "Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu".

There were so many memorable moments. Raiatea was just superb on all her vocals, but her renditions of "Kalama'ula" and "Kimo Henderson Hula" were just so pure and beautiful, just simply beyond description.

Other highlights of the show included:

Aaron doing an a cappella solo from an Italian opera that brought tears from my half Sicilian wife.

Jeff Peterson doing what Jeff Peterson always does...that is playing the most beautiful and graceful slack key solo's on "Kukui Nut Run " and "Kahealani".

Raiatea dancing Hula to "My Yellow Ginger Lei" as Aaron sang.

Raiatea paying homage to Genoa Keawe with her version of "Alika".

The Ladies of "Na Lei Hulu I Ka Wekiu" doing a Hula as Raiatea sang "I Left My Heart In San Francisco".

It is just so gratifying to see and hear an enormously talented vocalist like Raiatea carrying on the tradition of Lena Machado, Leina'ala Haili and Genoa Keawe with true grace and Aloha. I can't wait to hear more from her and to see her again.

I have learned from my music camp exposures the importance of respect in the Hawaiian culture. Aaron exemplified this before his a cappella performance. He acknowledge the his presence in such a historic theatre where the United Nations charter was signed. And to the audience he wanted to show respect by singing directly to them. (Had he accompanied himself on the piano, he would have been singing across the stage.) So to honor the place and the audience, he asked if he could perform in the way he did.

Also enjoyed and appreciated Raiateaʻs "talking story" with the audience introducing the mele she performed, tidbits about growing up, her gratitude with the musicians on stage supporting her. I was glad along with the audience that she did strum her ukulele, but as she said with Bryan playing, itʻs easy to just let her ukulele be part of the stage ornamentation.

Aloha Bryan,

I bought your wonderful Cd "Ka `Ukulele Lele" at the concert. The way you played at the concert was like the fabric that held everything together throughout the evening. I already have three songs from the CD on my play list for my radio show next week: "Mililani Morning", "Ka`a Ahi Kahului" and "Hanauma". All my friends that went to the concert are still talking about how fantastic it was. Please come back soon. There are some great venues in the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay area, also. But having the concert at the historic Herbst Theater in San Francisco really did add a special feel to the whole event, as GUke mentions in his earlier post.

Mahalo nui for the kind words! It made my job easy performing with such talented musicians as Steve Jones, Aaron Sala and Jeff Peterson on the "back line". All established, but most of all, all great guy's! Sometimes I think we had TOO much fun :) I hope to make it to Santa Cruz sometime soon!
