A great list of folks, all talented and deserving.

Congratulations to them all.

Only I do not understand "contemporary" thing about island music for
cyril's "He`eia". Seems like old kine to me.

I also do not understand Wonderful World for Iz. I guess because all the orchestrations were added?

And Darrin -- woo-hoo, Brah. A hearty congratulations.

Will there be any streaming broadcast of the ceremonies?

Na Hoku Hanohano submissions are made by the record labels, musicians, and distributors at the beginning of the calendar year. The form required to accompany every submission:
http://www.nahokuhanohano.org/NaHoku_Nomination_Form.pdf
allows the submitter to choose the genre and/or category in which they want that submission to be listed.

Once the submission deadline passes, a small group of HARA folks create a list of all the submissions for each genre and category (an arduous task!). Then the HARA Selection Committee meets once or twice (I'm on that committee) to ensure that each submission actually qualifies for each genre and/or category into which it has been listed. For example, some awards are exclusively for "island residents", so we cull out anyone who does not meet that requirement. This year we had a few submissions who requested placement in genre for which their recording was not qualified -- not enough Hawaiian language for that genre, or more hip-hop than reggae, etc. At that meeting, we have one CD for every submission -- so we can listen to tracks if we're not familiar with a particular recording, before clarifying its correct placement on the ballot.

I can't remember the specifics of Cyril's submission -- but I'm guessing that the placement of his CD in the "Island Music" genre, was done at his request.

Cyril's album is one that the selection committee had some difficulty with. It couldn't be put in the instrumental category because of the number of vocals, but it had too few vocals for the Hawaiian category. While I wasn't a member of the selection committee I did participate in some of the discussions regarding this and other borderline or grey area releases. It highlighted the need for the board to refine the criteria in several categories, and we will be doing it this summer after the Awards. As Maria mentioned we will have a separate slack key category in 2009. We tried to get one established this year but it was too close to the deadline for shipping the preliminary ballots.

Re: streaming. Yes, K5 will stream the awards.

I hope no one is thinking I am making stink about Cyril's He`eia. I am not. I love that album. I just couldn't understand the category for a recording which prominently features a mele ma`i. Don't get much more Hawaiian than that.

Aloha Wanda, didn't take it in that way at all. Every year it becomes harder to find the appropriate categories for some releases. I mentioned to my colleagues on the board of governors that we could potentially find ourselves with a release that did not fit in any category someday. Personally Cyril's release was one of my favorites of last year, too.

The Hawaiian category in the Na Hoku Hanohano Awards does have a language quantum: 75% of the tracks must feature vocals the Hawaiian language. Unlike the Grammy, instrumental and non-Hawaiian language tracks combined must comprise less than 25% of the tracks or it doesn't qualify.

In addition to refining the criteria of many categories, one of the board's major duties will be to communicate those changes to the membership so that artists (and fans) are not surprised if their releases are moved to a different category.

Cyril's release could have fit nicely into the "Slack Key" category, but we found too many issues to be dealt with in order to establish it this year. Before taking a position on establishing the criteria for that category I'm planning to speak to many of the artists to get their input on criteria.

Auntie,

Obviously not all submissions can be included within their respective categories. And over the past three decades, despite attempts to make it as fair as possible, many artists whose work you would think is worthy of an award or at least worthy of making the final cut are not on the final lists.

It brings into focus the primary drawback of contests and awards of this nature. That is, unfortunately the final vote has the dynamic of a high school popularity contest and the final lists reflect this. So this raises several questions. Are the attempts to make the final list as fair as possible? Or can they be manipulated to get a desired outcome for a particular artist? Or does anybody really care enough to do something about this perceived inequity? And a final question, will the sun rise tomorrow? Don’t take me too seriously ‘cause it can get you in trouble.

Junior's CD is on the ballot -- for graphics.

And I noted the surprising absence of Walter Keale -- I thought "Kahikina" was a wonderful recording.

Too bad the final ballot has to be narrowed down to no more than 5 entries in each category...some years, it could easily be double that.

Went to a hula event here on Kaua`i Saturday night, and the mistress of ceremonies (Kainani Kahaunaele's momma) suggested to the many visitors in the audience that instead of taking home t-shirts and stuff to give as gifts, they take home island music CDs. One size fits all; it'll last for decades.

Now if someone could just come up with a slogan that could drive this idea to ALL the visitors...???

I'm sure we all have favorites that didn't make the final list, but Herb Ohta, Jr.'s "Ukulele Journey" is one of my favorite CD's. Good luck to all the worthy nominees.
