J.J. Hall, host of KMUD's (Humboldt County Public Radio) Hawaiian Show "the Coconut Wireless," died of a heart attack on May 17. Since the late 1980s, J.J., aka K.K. on air, played traditional and contemporary Hawaiian music on the North Coast. A UH grad, he truly loved Hawaiian music and culture, something you could feel by listening to his shows. As well, he kept listeners abreast of news and issues affecting Native Hawaiians.
J.J. was also the driving force behind KMUD's Luau, a great annual event that celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2007. He brought some of Hawaii's finest musicians to Southern Humboldt County, including Dennis and David Kamakahi, the Kuo, Mahi &Pahinui Band, Cyril Pahinui, Willie K., Ikaika and Kevin Brown, and many more.
With almost 2 decades on the air, J.J. educated and enlightened so many of us with his passionate knowledge of Hawaiian culture. I am so grateful to have known such a generous, caring person. He will be missed by many.
Mahalo J.J., aloha nui loa, a hui hou... Michael
