OK I need some help here. I have a high end uke with friction tuners that have a screw to help adjust them. I am reticent to crank on those screws but am noticing that some tuners back off their tune within a minute or 2 of tuning them. Should I not worry and crank on that screw to get it to stay????? Other ideas?

Crank ʻem bra. That is what the screws are for. Tuners will get loose. Iʻve had to tighten the screws on my friction tuners of my G String ukulele. Iʻm just careful not to over do it and to also use the right size philip screwdriver so I donʻt strip the screwhead. |

Should I? Itʻs only $, and where Iʻm going itʻll burn or melt. |

hmmm . . too many years now, I played violin as a keiki . . I thought we used the bow rosin on the wooden peg tuners to make sure they didn't slip -- same principle here.
our resident fiddlers should be able to correct me |

Mika.... resident fiddlers, you know you on Taropatch yeah? Thanks for the help. Are you suggesting putting something on the tuners? |

Hapuna, None of my ukuleles have em, so i can't speak from experience. I was trying to remember too far back -- The tuners on a violin are similar. There are several taropatchers that also play fiddle -- thought they would chime in with their experience. |

The rosin is for the bowstrings. BUT, use blackboard "chalk" for the tuners. By the way, "The Ukulele Occasional" debut issue of Summer 2002, has an article by Frank Ford "Repair Shop, working with wooden friction pegs. For the article en totale, I would suggest emailing the publisher, Jason Verlinde, at info @ ukemag.com. |

FWIW, Jason's not doing the `Ukulele Occasional any longer (I guess two issues made it too 'regular' for him), but it has evolved into Fretboard Journal, out of Palo Alto. It might be quicker now to try him at jason -at- fretboardjournal.com
Or, Russ, just promise me you'll show up to SUPA someday, and I'll make you a photocopy of the piece! |

noneed tighten too much just enough to stop the slippage. You will immediately know if it is too tight. Sometimes about 5-10 degrees is nuff. |
