...no, not a "Jesus Loves Me" kind. They've asked me to play/sing a "Hawaiian" song on ukulele for the kids. Keeping in mind my basic chord skills, do you have any suggestions? And, I was told it was for "entertainment" factor since this is a Hawaiian-themed VBS; it doesn't need to be "religious" in nature. I'd thought of "E Huli Makou" and have them do the "turning" to right, left, etc. and hand motions for the eyes/hands/body/aloha part. Would this be appropriate?
Or, any other suggestions?

Ooh, no, not a flirting song--thanks for the information to the clueless.
I'd also thought of "Ekolu Mea Nui," doing both the Hawaiian and the English verses...
I'll go look up "Kanaka Waiwai," "Nanakuli" and "C-A-T...." Thank you, again. |

Wait.... "E Huli Makou" is a flirting song? I thought it was just a song about turning to the left, turning the right....kind of like the hokey pokey. I have missed so much! |

One song that we sang these past couple of weeks with Duke and Jay is "Hokulea - Star of Gladdness". It would be a good song for kids, it is upbeat, positive message, not complex and has mostly English words. And it can be sung, as Braddah Jay does, with GUSTO! It is what I am going to be working on. (Paul, too). Braddah Jay gave me lyrics. Duke can tell what chords. Duke picks it on `ukulele so very fine. |

As played by Duke, Hokulea used G,Am, D7, and C. I don't know if this song has been recorded or not, only place we know is one of the Iz DVD's. It's hard not to get caught up in it, though. Paul |

Kaona, brah, kaona. Something is hidden in those simple lyrics...think along the lines of "turn around, so's I can check you out, all ovah." |

'Opae E, by Irmgard Aluli, is a wonderful song for keiki - easy to play and memorize, repetitious verse, which kids love, and a lovely melody. It tells the story of a young man whose sister is kidnapped by the eel. The young man goes to the various sea creatures and asks for help in rescuing her. The shrimp, the mollusk, the seashell, and the snail all refuse, saying that the eel is so large and they are so small. Finally, the smallest creature of all - the opihi - agrees to help the man, saying confidently that it will cover the eel's eyes and allow the young man to rescue his sister from the eel's cave. A nice message for kids about how being little doesn't mean that one cannot be brave and accomplish big things. |

Guess I'll chime in on this one. I also teach Sunday School. You should check out the CD by Leon and Malia. The title of the CD is called Leon and Malia presents... Hawaii Kids Praise. Got some simple songs for the keikis. Hope it helps.
