Over the weekend I received this email from Matt Holober, venue manager at Mission City:
To All Concerned,
In the past 16 months Mission City has been applying for a permit to serve beer and wine. We had a city council meeting last Wednesday (May 28th), regarding alcohol and our entertainment license. There was some confusion as to what the final decisions were, after speaking with the owner today (Sunday) I was informed of the final results.
Beer and Wine - Approved. Entertainment - 7 days per week, UNAMPLIFIED Max Occupancy - 51 People (for the entire establishment)
The city of Santa Clara has denied us the use of a sound system during performances, and are limiting the number of people who can be seated in the coffee shop. These concerns where brought to attention from the neighbors behind the coffee shop. Tomorrow, (Monday June 2nd, 7:00PM @ Mission City), we have having a hearing and an open forum with the city council, planning commission, and the local residents whom live close to Mission City. We have hoping to come to an agreement that will be suitable for both parties, while allowing us to continue with music.
Two biggest issues that we have to address:
1. Sound - The music can be contained within the building. We have data to back up our claims, have taken measurements, and are quite confident that we can get the use permit of our amplified equipment back.
2. Parking - This is the biggest concern with the neighbors. Since our establishment has only 27 parking spaces, residents are concerned that extra vehicles will be parking on residential streets. We want to inform them that this is not the case. They are also concerned with the type of people that will be attending the shows/open mics. Our goal is to show the residents that we are not typical bar or club. We cater a different type of music (folk, acoustic, jazz, Hawaiian, classical), to a different type of audience (one filled with responsible adults and families).
The owner, Jae and I are requesting the attendance from the heads of the different communities that call this coffee shop home. If we can get the neighbors to understand that the sound and the parking are not going to be an issue, and if the city council can see the different music communities that are affected, they would be willing to give us a permit to continue with amplified music.
Meeting: Monday June 2nd, 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM @ Mission City Coffee Roasting Co.
We have a long and bumpy ride ahead of us, and I am confident that we can work with the neighbors and the City of Santa Clara to come to an agreement that will help both parties.
Jae and I want to personally thank all of the communities that have been supporting the coffee shop and music in the south bay these past few years. I apologize for such short notice, this has hit all of us very hard but I am confident that we can make things work.
For those of you whom cannot attend I will inform you of the results and next steps that need to be taken after the Meeting.
Thank You,
-Matthew D. Holober
I attended last nights meeting to represent us. The neighbors all had the NIMBY reasons for not wanting Beer and Wine. We all agreed with their concerns. The good representation by all of the musical groups that attended showed them that the people who attend and/or play at The Mission were folks just like them and not a bunch of young, drunken scofflaws. The biggest problem in the neighborhood is the hooka bar, "Smoke This" that attracts a poor crowd. Here's the major jist of the situation:
1. The city council only approved music on the premises for Friday and Saturday nights, UNAMPLIFIED. Jae has to go back and appeal this to six nights per week AMPLIFIED. As you all know, if you go out to the parking lot, you cannot hear the music, so, it's not truly an issue. Sound measurements were taken and charts compiled relative to local ordinances. The neighbors had no concerns whatsoever about the music sound level. No one could hear it and that was duly noted for the upcoming council meeting. Amplified or not, this one affects us the most. Right now, Jae does not have a permit for us to play as an official venue.
2. PARKING. As you are aware, this is the biggest problem. If we are to continue, we need to be diligent about finding parking in the lot or on The Alameda and not in front of residences. This is a tough one. If residential parking is the last resort, being quiet and respectful for the property owners, before and after the venue is essential.
Until further notice, I'm going to assume that we will still meet next Tuesday. To fly under the RADAR, we will not be an official musical group, just a bunch of patrons who show up with guitars and sit around in a circle playing music. This can be performance based or Kanikapila style.
Whether you are a regular or not, I think that attendance is critical to show our support for Jae and The Mission. Please come hungry and buy food and drink. Please take care of where you park. Please care!
Any changes will be posted ASAP.
Mahalo,
Dave

Hi Dave,
This news is unsettling. Unfortunately I won't be able to make the next open mic to show support. But please send my Aloha and thanks to Jae, Matt and the rest of the folks at The Mission.
As you know, we played unamplified a year ago when they were redoing the room, and it was still a good time and it turned into a good fun, informal kanikapila afterwards. Also, it's always great to express our appreciation to The Mission (and other venues) by purchasing food and drink and tipping the sound guys. Da Hawaiian Open Mic is still the best entertainment for the money!
Aloha,
Doug |

I'll do my best to be there. Personally I prefer un mic'ed instruments, (the room is small enough,) but sometimes the voices need a boost. |

Below is the last email from Matt regarding Mission City. Although it may be a little harder for some of you to get to Saratoga, I decided to give it a chance. July 8th would be the next open mic and I don't want to lose two months. Hope to see as many of you as possible. Signup at 7:00, play at 7:30.
Mahalo,
Dave

To All Music Communities:
Monday's meeting went very well, I want to personally thank those of you who were able to make it out. The neighbors dropped their "block" for live entertainment.
Results: Jae talked with the Planning Commission, and some of the council members (Tuesday), As of right now we cannot have music during the week. Music is only allowed on Friday and Saturday, Unamplified.
On July 8th we have an appointment with the city council, and if we play by the rules, the City Council promised that Mission City will get all of the permits that it requested, (Tuesday - Sunday) Amplified. That means no music what so ever during the week. I am sorry but you cannot hold your events at Mission City.
Until then I can offer you two options:
1. Cancel your event, until July
2. Have your event at our sister venue The Blue Rock Shoot in Saratoga. We currently have the Mission City sound system set up there. I talked with the owner of Blue Rock and he will be happy to host your events for the month. I will be there to provide sound. The room is smaller than Mission City, but we can seat 50 people. It's a more intimate venue and environment.
Address: 14523 Big Basin Way, Saratoga, CA
Let me know what you want to do. Thank you for all of your cooperation and help with this situation.
-Matt

I called the place about grinds. Got salads, pizza, and sandwiches. Mahalo Dog for your 'dogged' persistance. Ain't politics fun? I try, be there. |
