Welcome and good luck. There is a lot more info out there than there was just a few years ago. Listen to everything and everybody. Pick up a couple books & vid's. Drive however far you have to to see people play; and then introduce yourself and see if you can get some hang time.
But mostly-- come to one of the camps. Any of 'em. You will learn more than you possibly can on your own.
RE: Steel-- I second the Jerry Byrd book recommendation, but with one caveat (as a newbie): Jerry's style is not what the hip players in Hawaii are playing now. They are all about Feet Rogers-- the steel player with the original Sons of Hawaii.
At last month's Aloha Camp Geri Valdriz totally changed my way of thinking, simply by unlocking that door with a couple of very simple lessons. It ain't about chords.
