Aloha Kakou,
Once again we are at a crossroads with the South Bay Open Mic. The city of Santa Clara has decided that amplified music (music in general) will only be allowed on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I was offered the Blue Rock Shoot in Saratoga for our Tuesday night open mic, but that's unacceptable for most of you who travel many miles to participate. I have been offered 4:00 to 6:30 Sunday at The Mission (which ever one per month we want) to continue with our music.
I am asking those of you who participate for feedback. If Sunday is a good option, then I will book it. If not, we are pau unless one of you has a better idea or venue.
As it stands right now, there is NO open mic for July. Please let me know if you'd like to continue.

Bummer - I've been practicing in the first tuning other than taro patch that I've ever played - (F9) - one original song, 2 traditional pieces.
There are 2 place I know of within a few blocks of a freeway exit. I'll check them out in the next few days to see if they would be interested in hosting - just in case folks want to continue on an evening during the week. |

Thoughts:
Tuesday nite Blue Rock Shoot:
If you are comming down 85 from north or San Francisco (as some of us might be), downtown Saratoga is not very hard to get to. Just a short jaunt up the hill from the Saratoga exit on 85. So for people from the North, Blue Rock Shoot is actually closer, both in time and miles. No too bad either for those who come from the south up 85, just a couple of exits further north to go up 85 to Saratoga exit rather than take 17 (880) exit, probably just 5 minutes more traveling for that route (compared to Mission City destination).
Of course, for those coming from the east, it is probably 10 to 15 minutes further. Best route would probably be 17 (880) to 85 north and then take the Saratoga exit. On a weekday nite the route via 880 to highway 9 in Los Gatos and then over to Saratoga would be much slower.
But Blue Rock Shoot is also pretty small, right?
Sunday at Mission City:
Well- Me and the lead singer could actually travel together instead of in separate cars. The traffic is MUCH better on Sunday's than weekday commute times, so this is good too. Would want to schedule on a DIFFERENT Sunday than the Vacaville events. For me personally however , the Mission City Tuesday events were on the way home anyway so were very convenient travel wise.

Bottom line, I think I would be able to show up at Blue Rock Shoot on Tuesdays and at Mission City on Sundays as well, with a slight preference for Mission City on Sundays.

| Mahalo for all the legwork you have done, Dog. For Sundays at that time some of us have rehershal with the Hui @ 5 PM in SSF. That's Joe and me. That schedule is set out by Hiram a few months in advance. Sometimes! Since I am currently a bum, (where's the beach), wherever and whoever more or less works. I'll see if I can get that schedule current. |

Hi Dave,
I would prefer keeping the open mic at The Mission and doing it on either the 3rd or 4th Sunday of the month. That way we won't conflict with Temple Bar's Aloha Sunday open mic (1st Sunday) and Jerry's Vacaville kani (2nd Sunday). If I did my calculations right, Blue Rock Shoot would add another 12 miles each way on top of my current 48 mile drive.
Mahalo for all of your help in trying to get this resolved.

Wondering if the 4th Sunday of the month might cause a scheduling conflict for the Kam ohana... |

| Yeah, Laurence, it isn't much different time wise for me for either location. If I ever am gainfully employed again, the Santa Clara location would probably be more central, for Tuesday, but, that doen't appear to be happening. We'll have to see how the buggar plays out. There are definetly more fancy places to eat round the Blue joint. more toney for shure. |

I prefer the set up at Mission and an early pau time on Sunday sounds good to me, too. As always Iʻll be there as long as Iʻm not scheduled to work.

Thank you all for your replies. There seems to be somewhat a consensus that Sundays are OK. That's OK by me also. It looks like the Third Sunday is the easiest with regards to The Temple Bar, and Jerry. The Kam kani is always the last Sunday of the month, which could be the 4th or 5th depending on the month.
I will alert Matt at the Mission and see if we can start on Sunday, July 20. I will post the details as soon as I get them.

Aloha, Dave-
I'm chiming in late to this thread after attending the Open Mic for the first time this afternoon. This place and time seem like a good choice. At least for me, coming from SF, it makes all the difference, traffic and time-wise.
When we showed up at 4:25 we snagged the last open table in the room, so seems like it was pretty well attended.
Thanks to you for your efforts in keeping this going, and thanks to those who performed.

Well, the Sunday schedule worked pretty well for us, too.
The drive was easy and pleasant down 280 with a lot less traffic
than the weekday commute. Arriving at Mission City there were
several parking spaces available out front on the street (Never
was able to park in front before - always full), and there were
also several spaces available in the rear parking lot. So both
the traffic and parking were much better. Of course, it is summer
break time for the college and the situation might change when
regular classes start again.
Enough folks showed up to play that we had a decently long show,
and as Mike just pointed out, there was a fair attendance of
non-performing listeners.
(Hmmm... what IS a non-performing listener -  )
So, overall, the first Sunday attempt at open mike seemed to go
pretty well.
Since this whole change was started by the application for a beer
and wine license, I took advantage of the situation and also had a
pleasant glass of white wine during the show.

It was easy for Sil and I coming in from the East Bay too and as Lawrence mentioned, lots of parking out back. Dave, mahalo plenty for keeping this going. As always, I had a good time...

I truly appreciate all of your input and kudos. More especially I appreciate all of you who support this venue by showing up and giving your ALOHA.
I think the Fall and Winter months will be nicer; easier access and daylight.
I thought the playing this month was sweeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!

how did you find working in F9? i was thinking of you when i heard john keawe playing some new songs in a C9 tuning - it seemed to encourage john to be a bit more jazzy.
