Aloha Chris,

Just got my tickets this weekend from Sam over at Countrywood Music. I’m looking forward to seeing you all this Friday. I got a sneak preview on Saturday, when Brenda opened for John Keawe at Freight & Salvage. She was great--what a nice touch and distinctive style, with two original songs to boot! Keep an eye out for her. As John mentioned, “Someday, I’ll be opening for Brenda.”

For all you Taropatchers sittin’ on the fence, I highly recommend this concert. You are going to be in for a really cool musical experience. Chris, Brenda, William Coulter, and Adam Werner are all excellent musicians, and they bring a wide variety of guitar techniques, styles, and music genres. If you never heard Chris play, he often combines American fingerstyle, “slap ‘n tap," and other percussive styles to his slack key--very innovative blending, http://www.adamwerner.com/music-25.html .

William Coulter is a wonderful classical/Celtic guitarist (didn’t he win a Grammy?), who teaches guitar at U.C. Santa Cruz, and Adam Werner is an awesome Michael Hedges-influenced fingerstyle/percussive player ( http://www.adamwerner.com/music-19.html ), not to mention a darn nice guy (see http://www.woodsongacoustics.com/performers.php for profiles). I hope Adam plays the harp guitar again—such an interesting instrument ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z64EwEDoNYo --now if he would only slack it . . . ). On a funny note, at last year’s concert, William overheard me talking about kanikapilas with Brenda, and with an utterly confused look he asked, “What’s a kanika-whatcha-ma-call-it?”

The concert venue, Old Schoolhouse Theater in Pleasant Hill, has great acoustics and all the seats are good. The only drawback is that it is a small venue, so you really should get your tickets ahead of time, bum-bye you might be poho. Plus, I think this is the only Bay Area stop on this tour.

See y’all at the concert,

Doug

Just a friendly reminder, the concert is tonight. Hope to see some fellow Taropatchers there. I'll be the one wearing the Aloha shirt.

Aloha Chris,

It was a real honor and thrill for me to be a small part of the show. A big Mahalo to you, Brenda, Adam, and William for all of your support and encouragement. Not only are you guys incredible musicians, but you’re so humble, generous, and full of aloha.

Now, to the concert. It was simply outstanding! What’s amazing to me is that we get to experience top caliber musicianship in such a small, intimate setting right here in a little East Bay town. The atmosphere was very relaxed, with no pretentiousness--as close and comfortable as if we were in an ‘ohana room among friends and family.

Let me share a few of my highlights:

- Chris and Brenda’s duet on “Aloha ‘O Kona”--Is it possible to get chicken skin and tears at the same time? In my humble opinion, this is Chris’s signature song, which took him over 10 years to write but was well worth the wait. What a hauntingly beautiful melody with heartfelt lyrics, in English and Hawaiian. Brenda’s and Chris’ guitar parts blended perfectly, but the big surprise was hearing Brenda’s wonderful vocal harmony with Chris’ lead vocals. Exquisite. This was the first time I heard Brenda sing. This song is still stuck in my head.

- Adam’s “Apprentice of a Dead Man”--A song he wrote as a tribute to Michael Hedges, and which showcased his amazing fingerstyle, “slap and tap,” and other percussive techniques. The energy and excitement of “Apprentice” was contrasted with the poignancy and sheer beauty of “Impending Death of a Virgin Spirit,” a song written by William Ackerman (founder of Windham Hill Record), and who is a mentor of Adam’s (this is a clip from a previous concert, featuring Michael Manring on bass, http://www.adamwerner.com/music-18.html ).

- William’s "Amazing Grace"--His arrangement of this traditional song is the most beautiful instrumental version I’ve ever heard. Seeing it live was mesmerizing. Not only was his timing, intonation and technique so precise, but the feeling (i.e., aloha) grabbed your heart. Another highlight was William’s explanation and stories of the Shakers, a religious sect (yes the same Shakers known for their beautiful craftsmanship and furniture building). I was not aware that they were very musical. William played a few of his solo guitar arrangements of traditional Shaker songs that were so pleasing and lyrical that you could “see” the people dancing.

- Chris and Brenda’s duet on Keola Beamer’s “Barefoot on the Range”--Talk about nailing every note and being totally in synch. What a great arrangement for two guitars. Better than the original (no disrespect intended). This one needs to be recorded on a CD.

- Group ensemble on the finale, “Ku’u Home ‘O Kahalu’u”—I’m biased since this is one of my all-time favorite songs. You’ve never heard it played this way, with the combination of slack key, fingerstyle, subtle tapping and percussion, classical colorations, along with Chris’s lead vocals and Brenda’s and Adam’s delicate harmony. It was cool. It was magical.

Overall, the concert was heartwarming, educational, and inspiring. Wish more of my friends were there to experience it. Next time!

Mahalo Chris, Brenda, Adam, and William,

Doug
