Hey Julie, thanks for reminding me--I was meaning to get this information posted:
Lodging in St. Helena tends to be a bit pricey. However, Calistoga is just up the road a bit (and the Tucker Farm Center is actually between St. Helena and Calistoga) and has loads of fun places to stay, some complete with mineral pools and mud baths, from under $100 a night to over $400. For a list go to www.calistogafun.com
Napa is the other direction. (That is, St. Helena is between Napa and Calistoga.) Not as much fun as Calistoga, but there are more options for lodging. This website will get you info on places up and down the valley: www.napavalley.com
If you go to any of the other general search engines, it may show Santa Rosa as being within 15 miles of St. Helena...but that's only if you're a bird. It's a good 45 minute drive to St. Helena from Santa Rosa or Sonoma.
Whatever you decide, do it soon. It's a long weekend and a popular time of year to visit the Napa Valley.
Let me know what you find.

I just met Elaine at the 1st annual Napa Valley Aloha festival. Had a great time with music by Faith Ako and Cyril.
Elaine has scheduled a Crazy G contest and when I told her I plan to compete she said she was thinking of canceling because only her son is signed up. I don't know if that is good or bad for my chances, but I hope more folks sign up so we can have a real fun contest.
Just so you know what you are facing, I can get that song into 2nd gear and 3rd gear, but I can't quite get it into 4th gear and oooeee, overdrive like Jake! Can't do it. But I'll try.
Kona Bob, looking forward to seeing you. I've been playing the Kona Walking Stick and people almost break their necks doing a double take. Met a pro stand up bass player (had a bass tatoo on his arm) and he approved, really liked it.
Hope to see other Taro Patchers at the festival.
Aloha, Mike |

Alright! Now we have a contest. I just need to find an impartial judge.......
Here's the link to Dominator's version of the song: http://dominator.ukeland.com/Images/crazy_g_live.pdf
The only requirement is that you purchase a festival workshop pass ($45) which also gets you into all the workshops. I know, know, you want the workshop schedule. I'll try to post it this week. We've just added two new instructors: Mark Kailana Nelson and Kimo Hussey.

Impartial Judge. Hmmm. I bet Liko would be one, and who would argue with his decision?
Watched him dance the hula last night, he was phenomenal. I can't wait for the fun to start on October 9.

Will "workshop tickets" be sold at the door, Elaine, or must they be need purchased in advance to guarantee a slot?
And, maybe I've missed this somewhere along the way, but *where* are the Saturday activities occurring? An address so I can Google it, please? |

Hi Mike,
I think I may have met you at a kanikapila before (at Aunty Cathe's and/or Ross's?). I think you played Crazy G, Hi'ilawe, etc. The artist's sketch of you on your profile page resembles a Mike that I met, but I may be mistaken.
I was at the Napa Valley Festival too and bumped into Elaine passing out fliers for the Uke event. The slack key player backing up Faith Ako was none other than fellow Taropatcher Jim Cramer, who did an awesome job. To Faith and Jim's big surprise , Uncle Cyril Pahinui took a break from CD signing and sat in on bass. Uncle Cyril then did his own set at 4:00P, with Kapena Delima (Kelly Boy's son) accompanying him on bass and harmony.
Hope to see you at the uke festival.
Aloha,
Doug

Elaine, Looks like quite a few Taropatchers are going to be at the festival. Mary and I are both coming. Any chance there could be a meeting place Saturday so we could all get together and meet those we don't yet know ?

Sorry, I've been absent from the forum for a bit and see I have some catching up to do. I will be updating the website shortly, but, in the meantime:
Directions The major part of the festival (workshops, marketplace,& free performances) will be Saturday, October 10, from 9 - 5 (or there abouts) and held at the Upper Valley Campus of Napa Valley College in St. Helena. It is on College Avenue, just off Pope Street. So, if you're coming north on Hwy 29, when you get into town, turn right at the first light onto Pope Street, cross the valley and just before you get to the old stone bridge you will see the sign for the college on the right. It's a relatively small campus, so once you get there, everything will become crystal clear.
If you're coming up the Silverado Trail, you turn left on Pope Street and the campus will be on your left, just after you cross the old stone bridge. It's a more scenic drive if you come this way, but very easy to miss the turn onto Pope Street. Workshops We will be selling workshop passes there but it would be really helpful if you could purchase them ahead of time so we know how many people are coming and can accommodate them. I will try to get the schedule and workshop descriptions posted on our website by the end of the weekend (There's only so much a poor girl can do.)
I should add that I am being very ably assisted in this endeavor by Susie Kagami of Hawai'i Music Live, Jamie Graff of Nimbus Arts, Konabob, Mike DaSilva, and Mark Kailana Nelson.
That's right, Mark's coming, so get ready to have "fun with your 'ukulele." And Kimo Hussey has opted in as well!
Luau The luau is just about sold out, so if you want some of Keoki Kahumoku's fabulous chow, you need to get your registration in ASAP.
Marketplace We'll have food vendors at the festival as well. And, we have an amazing group of luthiers who'll be there with their hand-crafted 'ukuleles, including Chuck Moore who's coming all the way from the Big Island. Unbelievable.
Our major festival sponsors, Kala Brand 'Ukuleles, Ohana, and KoAloha will also be there, so there'll be something for every pocketbook. And there will be people selling beautiful Hawaiian clothes and jewelry. And someone will be there selling Kani Ka Pila Klips!
Raffle Raffle prizes include a K-Wave from Kiwaya, 3 of Kala's fruit-inspired 'ukuleles, and a spalted maple tenor cut-away with equalizer, headphones from SkullCandy, 3-night stay in Kailua Kona, and lots more. Buying raffle tickets and CD's from the performers is a great way to support the festival and ensure there will be another one next year. (Hint, hint) (Raffle tickets can be purchased through the mail and you don't have to be present to win.)
That's it for now.

Sorry Tonya, I just realized I forgot to give the addresses:

Festival de 'Ukulele (workshops, marketplace, free performance) Saturday, October 11, 9am - 5pm Upper Valley Campus, Napa Valley College 1088 College Avenue, St. Helena, California Luau Saturday, October 11, 5am - 7pm Nimbus Arts at the St. Helena Marketplace 3111 St. Helena Hwy., St. Helena, California Grand Finale Saturday, October 11, 8pm - 11 pm Tucker Farm Center, 1201 Tucker Road, Calistoga, California
FYI: Tucker Farm Center is visible from Hwy 29, it's on the left as you go north on Highway 29 towards Calistoga. The Google map does not give a very accurate portrayal of its location.
Hope that helps.

Aloha Clay,
Taropatch meeting spot? What a great idea. I'm going out to the site on Tuesday and will see if I can scope out a good place. Wouldn't hurt to give me a reminder as we get closer to the day.
Can't wait to see you and Mary, again.

Almost forgot,
Liko Puha will be joining Robyn Kneubuhl, Mark Nelson, and Konabob on Friday night (Dancing Under the Stars) to lend some vocals so Robyn can do some hula for us. Wow, if you haven't seen Robyn hula (or sing), you are in for a huge treat. (Not to mention the first public appearance of these guys together.) And if Liko's there, I'm sure we can coax him into a little hula as well, now that's a whole lotta hula.
Speaking of treats, Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen will be providing the dinner. Don't let the name fool you, Cindy Pawclyn is one of the most respected chefs in the Napa Valley and a huge proponent of the slow foods movement. She is responsible for three of the valley's top restaurants: Mustard's, Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen, and Go Fish! So the meal is going to be stellar. Cindy's Backstreet Kitchen is our favorite local restaurant for "date night."
But wait, there's more. We will also be serving (as part of the meal and a possible wine tasting experience) wines from Cakebread Cellars, Alexander Valley Vineyards, and Tudal Winery and probably a lot more. This is, after all, the Napa Valley and wine flows like water, here.
And the price is right. Where else are you going to get an amazing dinner, stellar wines, and fantastic entertainment in the Napa Valley for just $85? And support a worthy cause!
Hope you can make it.

ELAINE!
Are you serious? THE CINDY PAWCLYN!!??? Oh, I'm going to have to go an a fast before the party now! I can't believe the line-up you've got here.
Saw Liko at the George/Keoki/Norton show at the Mello, he was as gracious as ever. And his hula is something else, my photos just don't do him justice.
We are so looking forward to this, but as I'm always tardy on making reservations (too many other things to do), we'll be driving the party mobile (RV) up there hoping that we can park it somewhere without getting arrested and/or towed away!
Hi Susie!
Aloha nui loa,
Julie
