Gabby Pahinui with the Sons of Hawai`i, Hula Records CDHS-503, the one with the Coronation bandstand on the cover, has John Maunawili (a.k.a. Eddie Kamae). |

Russell, this will really fry you. Eddie Kamae told me he's on one of Gabby's albums but -- due to contractual obligations with another record label -- his name could not appear on Gabby's release. He was surprised that I was surprised by this information...and told me that was just one example of many similar recordings!!!
Sheesh...I'm sooooooo confused....
Maria, pages 52-53 of the book "Hawaiian Son, The Life and Music Of Eddie Kamae" tells this story. When it came time for the first album done by The Sons Of Hawai'i, Eddie was still under contract with an other record company who had just released his solo album "The Heart of The Ukulele". So, for this first Sons of Hawai'i album, Gabby got top billing and it was called "Gabby Pahinui with The Sons of Hawai'i".
Eddie used a pseudonym...and is listed on the album as John Maunawili. He is also out of focus on the cover of the album, standing far in the background along with an out of focus Feet Rogers and Joe Marshall who also decided to be out of focus to support Eddie in his anonymity. |

Did Eddie say which album? I know from _Hawaiian Son_ that this no-credit/no-photo thing happened on the first Sons album--part of the reason the rest of the band is out of focus in the background of the cover photo. (The other reason for *that* seems to have been the idea that Gabby was the star/leader--the LP label has Gabby's name in a big typeface and "With the Sons of Hawaii" much smaller. The only "Gabby album" from that 60's period I can think of is "Pure Gabby," which credits Danny Stewart as uke player. And if my notes are correct, Eddie is listed on the three Sons-lineup Hula Records Maile Serenaders albums. More mysteries. . . .

http://www.mele.com/music/artist/gabby+pahinui+%26+sons+of+hawai%60i/gabby+pahinui+with+the+sons+of+hawai%60i/ If I did this link stuff right, this should lead you to a link showing a picture of the album cover.(CD re-release), along with track list, sound samples, and a nice young lady who will be glad to send you your very own copy for only a little kala. And a uniformed government official will deliver it to your hale. The CD says "John Maunawilli(a.k.a. Eddie Kamae) The original release on vynyl(Wynyl, in Hawai'i?) probably did not say this, as the annonymity would have been null and void, at a time when Uncle Eddie's contract was not null and void. Aloha Paul and thanks for the link. If I could suggest using this website to shorten your link above, it would make reading this thread a little more pleasant.

re that 78 single of Gabby Pahinui on e-bay. Please do not bid on it on account of we want Kathleen Pahinui to win the bid so she can surprise Bla. He would be thrilled. Or if someone wants to get it and make one very nice makana na ka pu`uwai so Gabby's `ohana can have a bit of his history and legacy, well, that would be nice too. If anyone has it or wins it and you want to get in touch with Kathleen, send me an e-mail.
Just throwing an idea out there for someone to think about.

In September I inherited the rather extensive collection of Hawaiian vinyl of a great friend, who died unexpectedly in May. It consists of 275-300 45's mostly Waikiki & 49th State, with some Hula, Decca and some really obscure labels, Rondo, Criterion and more. As well there are about 100 78's and about 50+ 33's
I only recently had time to go through the 45's. I managed to organize them on an Excel spreadsheet (20 hours) and ended up with 11 pages of entries. So far it is organized according to artist, song and label. So far the # for each 45 isn't part of the database yet, something I will add when I organize the collection according to the spreadsheet.
It's a pretty amazing collection of music, a lot of it new to me. Lots of Genoa, John & Pua Almeida, Alfred Apaka, John Pi'ilani Watkins, Naughty Abbie . The Waikiki sides had many artists new to me, Pauline Kekahuna, Mikilani Fo, Iwalani Kahalewai, some truly amazing musicians. As well there are some Sonny Chillingworth cuts and some Gabby songs asked about previously in this thread. Mahalo Nui by Gabby, Charles Miller is Waikiki # 45-602, backed by Uluwehi O Kaala by Iwalani Kamahele & the Royal Hawaiians. Gabby's Wai Hu'i O Keaniani is Waikiki #45-559, with Honolulu I'm Coming Back Again by Andy Cummings and His Hawaiian Serenaders on the b-side . There are numbers prefaced by TERK below the artists name on Waikiki Records labels, I'm assuming the lower #'s represent the a-side
I feel incredibly fortunate to have inherited such a slice of Hawaiian Music history, and will share any information with anyone interested.

Michael, many thanks for posting the info about the Gabby Waikiki 45s--I've just patched it into the appropriate place in Chapter 2. Every brick makes the wall stronger.
Whenever you're willing to share a copy of that Excel file, I'd love to see it--and I'd be happy to add whatever scraps of discographic data I've managed to gather. |

Michael, I think the Iwalani Kamahele you referenced now lives in the Seattle area, and she still raises chicken skin on my arm with that other-worldly voice of hers. Very cool! |

Aunty Iwalani told me that she recorded years back in Hawai'i. She get plenny talent an' discipline. Sonny Kamahele, the great steel player, is her brother. |

As Uncle Danny says, she is the epitome of elegance, and grace, I might add. It's really fun to play backup behind her singing. When I was starting to ply Hawaiian steel (eschew pedals!), she would hum the meolody to a song I didn't know while I was playing my solo (not so often now). |

Russell, I will be happy to send you a copy of the Excel file. I still need to add the 45's # to the database. The collection belonged to a friend who had been doing a weekly Hawaiian music show on the public radio station in Humboldt County Ca. since 1988. I feel a need to share the music and and any information about it.
Which opens up another possible topic. Who is playing on these 45's? I hear Gabby singing background on some Mikilani Fo songs, I also hear Sonny Chillingworth on a couple of Varoa Tiki songs.
Regarding Iwalani Kamahele, other-worldly is a great way to describe her voice. I can't think of any Hawaiian singer who sounds like her. I have 3 songs with her singing, I wish there were more! You guys up in the Northwest the are so lucky to have someone like her in your community.
