First of all, a tribute to Jerry Reed, a very fine guitar picker who died September 4 at age of 71. What a swell guitar player, magic flying fingers. Jerry going to join the big jam in the sky. Aloha `oe, brother Jerry. He was way more than Smokey & the Bandit and Amos Moses. Way more.

*****ah-oo-gah***ding, ding, ding *** http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnOcjgZ-Ir8 Gabby and Peter Moon playing Waialae. Peteah Boy posted this yesterday under "Performance thingies". But listen all the way to the very end, when the song is pau and Gabby asks, “How’s the stew?” For all the manic guitar playing and the rough Hawaiian voice sometimes and the falsetto and stuff, Gabby’s speaking voice is so very gentle. At least that is how it struck me. Yeah, I know, other folks have said I am stricken.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fw_jt_hinpY - The TV show what features our own dear Retro and Gloria Nahalea. This is the first part of 3 parts discussing the Kalama Days festival. Once you get this one, you can use the links to the other two parts. I was so excited to hear Gregg’s voice. I must mention that the musical recordings are less than optimum, but you get to hear Alika and also Brother Noland. Now Gregg, tell us about Brother Noland’s camp to teach you to live off the land. I really would like to know much more about that. But dadblame, where are da Oddah Guyz?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTbISJTbOS4 Kapalai`ula de Silva dancing “Hanohano Wailea” in the 2006 Merrie Monarch. When they taught the 2007 Northcoast Hula Workshop here in Cleveland, Kihei taught us this mele and we did plenty learning about it. He wrote it first of all for Mapuana as a love song, for missing her when they were away from each other, but moreover he said to recognize the places that were so dear to them and their side of the island. He wanted the place names to be documented in song lest the names someday be forgotten. He wrote the words and Uncle Moe Keale wrote the music. He said he called up Uncle Moe and asked him to do the music and Moe hemmed and hawed about it and said he was kind of busy but he would get to it someday. The next day he called Kihei and said it was finished. The music came to Uncle Moe in a dream. He got up and wrote down the music and it was pau. A Na Hoku award winning mele that came to Uncle in a dream! And of course, the hula was choreographed by Mapuana. What a talented family! If you ever get a chance to talk story with Kihei, please take advantage of it. He is so knowledgeable and so willing to share and teach.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNtSAHD4KBg – the A-L-O-H-A song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auhJQKi4wFs – An unknown person singing and playing Hi`ilawe. Wow!!!!! Don’t know who da heck, but very swell, garanzballbaranz.

I am from Maui. I live on Lahaina side.
i play music for a living and have been doing so for the last 12 years.
I currently play at the Royal Lahaina Resort and also Ka'anapali Beach Resort.
I do ALOT of weddings and conventions for business people who come here for business and have partys.

I was the studio guitarist for Pueo Pata's first Album.

E komo mai, Josh! Hah, you buggah. No wonder I fell in love with your music and why it sounded so good! You are one professional!!! I just looked at your video yesterday and have it on my list for posting next Sunday. Please, how do you pronounce your last name?

Please share with us how it is playing professionally at the resorts. Do the haoles listen to the music or are you just part of the "ambience"? Do they appreciate the fine music you make? Do you play traditional Hawaiian music for the tourists? Do you teach the story behind the mele?

E kala mai, I am very niele, nosy, but I really like hearing different perspectives. Most of us guys, we like the music just because. We do it for love, no $$$. Is it possible to make a living at playing Hawaiian music?

Is that your daughter in the May day film? She is one beautiful girl and has great potential dancing hula.

Come tell us all this stuff under the "Introduce Yourself" thread.

Wanda
