This is for anyone near the Chicago/Milwaukee area.
I found an excellent group in Milwaukee, WI, that has several Hawaiian/Polynesian activities throughout the year. They have Uke and Hula groups (and lessons), and also a yearly festival and Luau. If you live near this area, this is the place to meet islanders and play Hawaiian music. This link is to pictures my wife took at thier 2nd anual Luau last weekend.

In the pictures, the man holding the ear of corn is named Kalani, and he is the best Hawaiian/falsetto singer I have heard in a long, long time. He also funds the outings and is very passionate about Hawaiian culture.
Hey, I though I was all alone in this neck of the woods :) Then, jus lidat, I find myself playing Ki Ho'alu on stage and talking to islanders about my home town and common acquaintances.
One strange thing though...plenty of excellent singers and musicians doing Hawaiian music but all in standard tuning and in a band setting. I am the only Slack Key guitar player around. ??

Eh, Bob. You grow one beard.
Also, I know Minnesota ain't Wisconsin, but Jeff Kamakahi, Dennis' brother, teaches at a college over there in Minnesota. He has videos on You Tube playing some slack key under user name jkamakahi (go figure that). So there is some aloha in those cold states way up there. http://www.youtube.com/user/jkamakahi |
