http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYxnXMYHMPY - What is the history of "Aloha Friday"? Not the song, I mean, the cultural type thing. Seems like Hawai`i had the casual Friday thing way befo time.
When we went one time Henderson, NV to one of dear Don Narup's shows starring Denis Kamakahi, Cyril Pahinui, Patrick Landeza and Gary Haleamau, we got to hear and see in the flesh Uncle Paul Natto and hear the song right from the horse's mouth, so to speak. How cool was that?!

We had Aloha Friday of sorts in the 50's too. It had nothing to do with coining a term, or wearing aloha attire in a business setting. It did have everything to do with the attitude-of-the-day. Fridays were the head start to the weekend.
In my small community, it meant that the next day (or two ), somebody was having a luau. From Friday afternoon we showed up at somebodys house to help with the preparation. Maybe cutting kiawe wood, maybe going lama-lama Friday night with the nets for kuhonu (white swimming crab), maybe building the luau patio, with old 2x4s, a big puka canvas and lau niu ... Plenty work that wasn't considered work. Now Dat was Aloha Friday... |
