Choke musics and videos for watch and listen. Enjoy the bounty!

You Tube, week of September 14, 2008

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2qCEKiPWM0 – Here are Duke & Jay obviously having good fun playing “Opihi Moemoe” for us.. You guys are so good. Ahdunno if any one is bettah den da oddahz, but….. And I love my Jay, bopping and shaka lidat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NeakUbHkHsI – Ku`uipo Kumukahi on Pakele Live. This one is Ahe Lau Makini. The Queen (and others of the royal family) really wrote such magnificent songs. Here is one of the best renditions of Lei Nani I have ever heard or seen danced. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-KlDRqAlpc Also can go here to see more of Ku`uipo Kamakahi’s performances on Pakele Live. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=kumukahi+pakele&search_sort=video_date_uploaded This is so wonderful to be able to see all this music. So many great songs, great renditions, great hula. Oh, did I say before it is great? Well, doggone it, it sure enough is!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sn46K9AExIo Here is our new Taro Patch son, Zack Boy (slackkey808) noodling around a bit with Pua Lililehua and some Elvis stuff. Zack Boy get choke talent!!!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0ALg0ffyKU The Dominator playing “Star Spangled Banner”. All I can is is WOW.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jM_oqVscv3M&feature=PlayList&p=C1D866D34976DA2D&index=1 - Our TP `ukulele man extraordinaire, Keonepax playing Morning Dew. John, I really am touched by your rendition. It is such a beautiful song and the way you do it makes me want to weep. Mahalo, Brah. I probably have posted this before, but I love it. So if I did, e kala mai, and enjoy it again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYhN2mPUOH4 Here he is doing “No More Lonely Nights”.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33QEhMff5Qw – A commercial for Roy Sakuma Studios.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LuNhlGVKBEM – Brothers Cazimero – CD Release Party for Destiny

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fn7bIj-XW4s – a beautiful original composition by Lanaki9 entitled Summer Country Slackin’. Very nice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_j-SYuH2QU – Jesse Tinsley – Kalama`ula and that oh so beautiful Pua Lilia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_3pk-Qq1ng I do not know how true this is, but a lovely tutu lady we met told us that in mele, lilia usually has kaona that refers to female genitalia, and that it is really not proper to name a child Lily because of that connotation, that the name would be “vulgar”. Pua Lilia, she said meant a man’s lover. And here is Lei Nani. This is great and such a vintage look with the microphones and the guitar. Sweet! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg5_83o7fmk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_QbzJvzRVmg And speaking of Pua Lilia, listen to Martin Pahinui’s amazing voice and George Kuo’s fantastic guitar, and of course Aaron rounding it all out on bass and with his deep, resonant voice as they do a great job on Pua Lilia. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggO-6K7UOUA And here they are doing `Ama`ama.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DcAs6_icDBQ – A small study on slack key `ukulele, and he gives his props to Uncle Dave, UkeUncle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T70w0LnarVs Uncle Peter Delapina playing “Unchained Melody” on the `ukulele. Sweet!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6v_Z2ym9yU&feature=related Also a most exceptional rendition of “White Sandy Beach”.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHIZnmWdDsY – from Ballles1000. He and his `ohana play a unique blend of music. First of all they are Puerto Rican and are drawn to that music from their heritage, but they are also Hawaiian and frequently play some of the most beautiful Hawaiian music. The whole family is involved, including sons. If you go to his You Tube page, you can find great things such as with the tipple. But some truly great `ukulele playing. And the papa is recuperating from a heart attack. My brother in heart!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_3pk-Qq1ng – Uncle Dave has this very great photo montage while “All Hawai`i Stands Together” plays. Thank you, Uncle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSS05B8X4Gk Danny Carvalho “Keali`i’s Mele” and “Song for Allie” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBZnW8VnFb0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-arkOPNYNE – The Royal Hawaiian Minstrels – Lehua Lani

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mrRr5UuCFw - Slackkeymom playing Kalena Kai. We do not see too many women playing slack key. She does a good job. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FV1BAP_rZnU Here is Ku`u Lei Awapuhi Melemele.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6V0mj1SM78&feature=related Hi`ilawe being performed tight key style. He has a lovely vocal. Don’t know who da heck, but very one nice rendition.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohHatIfHhSY&feature=related – John Cruz doing Hi`ilawe. Interesting hula. I really like how they dance the vamps. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNprT5kJzac – Island Style These have been performed at Don Quixote’s August 2008. Patti Maxine on steel. Very nice. Can get more of his performance from strictlyArchivalProd on You Tube. Does he always squinch his eyes when he sings Island Style? Every time I see him do this song, he is squinching.

I’ve been drawn once again to Isa Lei. Here are some various versions of this heart rending song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G-yexSFc_4 – Isa Lei - Julie Taale, arrangement by Matthew Salapu Faiumu and performance by the Samoan Methodist Church in Mangere

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qzEgrkueI8 – Another rendition of Isa Lei by Wayne Irava. What a beautiful voice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNZZKYrSiLQ – the group “23 on a good night” . I love the choral arrangement. Beautiful harmonies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lr7W6IMvim0 – Just a regular family singing the most beautiful harmony.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfyeMZFWhvs – Ed Gerhard playing Isa Lei.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4adBOqSdi0 – Tofa mai Feleni – To me. One of the most beautiful songs ever written.
