Aloha - wanted to let you all know that Makana did an awesome job at the Guitar Player magazine's Guitar Superstar competition up in San Francisco this past weekend! He kicked off an evening of blazing guitars and original music and as 2nd runner up he won not only thousands of dollars worth of guitar gear but the respect and admiration of some of the top guitarists in the world:
"The competition gifted me an incredible opportunity to share my slack key music with a broader audience. I've given almost 20 years of my life to perpetuating and evolving the style, and it was exciting not only to perform in front of some of the world's most renowned rock guitarists (Joe Satriani, Andy Summers, Steve Vai), but also to witness acoustic solo slack key guitar shining in the context of full band-backed electric guitar shredders. I am honored to represent this uniquely Hawaiian approach to guitar, and am thankful to the multitude of fans who offered their unwavering support throughout."
I was stoked to be in the same room as these guys and especially when I had the chance to talk story small kine with rocker George Lynch! Unreal! Anyway, congrats to Makana!
Ho'omaika'i e Makana! Ua ho'okani pila 'oe me ka maika'i loa!

Mitch, I made it out to the event as well.
Makana performed great. He fused "Na Po`o Ka La" with "Necksnap Blues" and called it "Current of Life," and played with a sense of feeling that many of the electric guitarists lacked.
Makana probably was hurt by the fact that he was the first of 10 performers, but he should be proud nonetheless.
I posted some photos on Facebook of the event: http://www.new.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2150996&l=4705f&id=2416672
