Never had a micro cassette for class...now there's digtal recorders...just need a simple one when I 'm in class...not just to hear the instructor's voice, but mainly a clear sound of the guitar...unfortunately I have no desire to purchase a recorder for $200 because for that kind of money I can easily purchase a beach guitar.

David Battino, my editor over at O'Reilly Digital Media has written quite a bit about digital voice recorders.

Here's a good place to start: http://blogs.oreilly.com/digitalmedia/2006/09/your-voice-recorder-questions.html

The Olympus DS-2 has been supplanted by a whole raft of new models:

I'd suggest a quick trip to your local electronics/office supply store so you can get your hands on a few. "Ease of Use" is a highly subjective term. And only you will know if the quality vs price trade-off is worth it.

If you have an iPod, you might consider an inexpensive mic. I reviewed three here:

Happy recording...

There are many choices around $50, but the differences are the file types, and whether and how you can download them.

I have a cheap RCA unit. In it's highest quality mode it will record for 4 hours, but not high quality enough for music. It does have built in software to convert to .WAV files on your computer

It's easier to ask for forgiveness, than permission!

Mahi,

Have you tried running an electret mic into your laptop? Cost is way below dedicated recorders. You get more versatility with fewer toys cluttering the house, and the quality of recording is definitely better than simple voice recorders. If the laptop does not have built-in recording software, you can use the free products that have been described in previous Patch postings.

Aloha,

Roger

At the newspaper where I work, I make multimedia slideshows for our internet website and I use a simple voice recorder, a Sony ICD-SX57, which I found on sale for under $50. It's about the size of two Sharpies side-by-side.

If you go to link above, the top three stories on the page were done with the Sony voice recorder and edited in Garageband. The fourth was done with a Microtrack 24/96 and the fifth was also done with the Sony.
