It's pretty bad here. On a personal note, I walked to work yesterday since my normal bus route wasn't running. Luckily, I CAN walk to work - it only took an hour (not bad considering the icy sidewalks).

On a less personal note, conditions were so bad yesterday that a chartered bus carrying students almost fell onto I-5. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/392969_bus20.html

I noticed that the nectar in the hummingbird feeder had frozen overnight. As I was replacing the feeder with new nectar, a hummingbird came up to feed before I could even get back into the house. Those hummingbirds are tough.

This is the longest cold snap I can remember since 1990 (the only White Christmas I've ever experienced). We're in for more snow and wind and freezing rain tonight. The current forecasts don't call for temps above 39 until the 26th.

It looks so nice on top of Mauna Kea when you are floating on your back in the 80 degree water off Hapuna Beach. I agree with all of you.
Snow covered mountains make nice calendars... but that is about as close as I like to get.
My mother-in-law called yesterday from Denver to report that she knew of two people who already have broken bones from falling on ice.
Ouch!

Momi is out in the neighborhood taking photos this morning. She tells me we have about five inches of snow on the ground here.

That's pretty amazing, Retro, for Seattle to get that much snow. Two to three inches is more common. Unfortunately, I have about 28 inches surrounding my house from the last three days here in the Inland Northwest. And the thermometer says it's warmed up to 10 degrees.

We have snow laws to contend with, as if the snow isn't enough grief.
We have a certain amount of time to clear it from the sidewalk after it snows, and no parking on the street if there's 2" or more snow on the ground. In some older neighborhoods, there aren't any drivways, so the street is the only place you have to park, but then the plows can't move the snow. Every year people die of snow shovel triggered heart problems. There are falls, and back injuries as well. The worst part is trying to drive in it and deal with the Machiavellian Attendance Policy at work. January of 2010, the Abcense police can chase me all they want, I'll be calling in sick every time it snows in preparation to Retire.

Momi - those pics are fantastic! Especially the one of the gargoyle. I can see that on the Momi/Retro Christmas card next year.

Could it be possible that the cold weather makes the wires that wired my sternum back together after the heart surgery freezing cold and make my chest ache? When it gets so cold like this, my chest just aches and aches. If I put my microwavie heating pad thing on it, then it doesn't ache any more. Sometimes I also think my lens implants from the cataract surgery make my eyes freeze, too, when it gets so cold. And I do mean it is cold, about 16 degrees with winds 30-40 mph.

I'm with you, buddy! Couple of Februarys ago, my wife and I along with her brother and sister-in-law went to Maui for vacation. The day before we got home, the general Baltimore area got hammered with alternating layers of snow and ice. 24 hours without sleep and John and I had to use a digging bar to chop up the ice in order to get back into the driveway. Only good thing was that a friend had made sure I knew about some garage parking near the airport that was only a couple of dollars more per day than where I would have parked otherwise, so we didn't have to dig out the car. We're hoping for better treatment after AMC in a couple of months.

Nice photos Momi! We have over a foot on the ground here in Olympia and it's been coming down again lightly but steadily for a couple of hours now. According to the last weather report we can look forward to another 4-7" overnight. We've already shoveled our driveway three times and we've got snow piled about 4' high on either side. It's getting harder to throw it over the top of the hill! I must say though that we're really happy we did not get any of the winds that they originally predicted. But we're cozy and warm in our house, we have a vehicle with 4WD if we need it, the automatic generator is standing by and we just finished watching the Seahawks win their last game for Mike Holmgren, so all is good!

Aloha,
John A.

Snowed about a foot here Friday, then about four more inches yesterday. Not sure if it snowed or not today, there was so much snow in the air from the wind blowing over the drifts. Only good thing is that when I shoveled the drive all I had to do was throw the snow in the air and away it went. But today was so cold I think my battery froze- anyway my car wouldn't start. Went to get another car I am trying to sell, that I have parked at my mother in law's, but the snowplow had buried it up to the windows and of course the salted compacted snow turned to ice. At least they did plow, finally- money is short and so they try not to. Now it is pushing zero with a wind chill of minus twenty three. The dogs are whining but no, they will not get a walk...

Friday I backed down my driveway onto the street and got stuck- had to shovel about 50 feet of street then get a push to start me off, and I managed to gain enough momentum to plow my way through the snow. Except there is a slight uphill in the direction I usually go and I couldn't make it that way. Luckily I was able to back on my track and turn the other direction, slightly downhill, and make it to a more heavily used street. About fifty cars in the ditch, but other than a little fishtailing I managed fine.

Just so those of you who live where the water is more civilized and runs off by itself, instead of having to be shoveled out of the way, know what you are missing. I told my father in law I didn't think this was a suitable place for humans to live; he responded "You call this living?"
