Time again for Open Mic. We are moving out of Mission City and Sunday nights and will try something new. I hope this is amenable for continued success. Mahalo to Uncle Robert for helping with this connection.

See you on Thursday, November 13. 6:30 to 9:00 PM at:
4th Street Bowl,
1441 N. 4th Street, in San Jose

Check this link for more info: 4Th Street Bowl

Signups will be at 6:00 PM and the first act will be at 6:30. The 4th Street Bowl has karaoke every night starting at 9:00, so we must be done by then. The venue is also located in the bar area so
Children are not allowed !!!!!!!!!

Thank you to those of you who continue to share your music.

Keiki Makana Kokua

Every year we have generously donated toys for unfortunate children during the holiday season. This year let us give again. Please bring an unwrapped toy. The price is at your descretion and from the heart. Mahalo

See you on Thursday, Nov 13.

Dave,
In past years we have used the December event as a toy drive for Toys for Tots. However, with new schedule, that may be too late in the month. want to use Nov. instead?

Raymond,

Glad you brought this up. I was thinking the same thing. The last couple years we were almost too late to donate the presents. I have added info in the opening post.

Mahalo,

Dave

Darn, I won't make it. Got a date with the plebotimist(?) that day. Did see Kevin Brown and Ohana a week ago, George, Nancy, Misako, Nabu, and Job too, on my trip to Maui. Oh, by the way, I flew for less that 5 Cees.

Hi Dave,

I'm planning to come and am looking forward to seeing the new venue. Please save a spot for me if I arrive a little late.

Hi Dave:
John Keawe says Aloha.
I just met him after his show at the Kings Shoping in Waikoloa.
He is such a nice man and wonderful performer.
I wish we could be there for the open mic, but
we will not be back from Hawaii until 11/21.
Aloha,
Les

I would really like to be there, especially since it is a new venue, but both Linda and Kevin have had flu-like symptoms last 2 days, so it doesn't look good for my making it. If I don't make it, I have 2 toys which I will take to a Toys for Tots drop near our house.

The economic disaster has hit my job this last couple of weeks. I am suddenly on a crunch project to reduce product cost and have been forced to work on weekends and late on weekdays. I do not know if I will be able to leave work before 9PM tonight or not.

But at least I am still employed.

Good luck with the show and the new venue in any case.

Indeed, we are all feeling the effects of the economy. Unfortunately, I believe that we're in for a protracted recession. Conservation is important.

On a lighter note, I am planning to be in the Bay Area over Thanksgiving week. Probably not any concerts or jams going on but would love to see some of you.

Andy

Aloha Andy,
Where in the bay area are you staying? Stop in if you are near SoSF on the weekend.

By the way, the open mic at 4th Street Bowl went well, if a little lightly attended. Thanks Dave for dragging your gear out and coordinating the event.

The 4th Street Bowl is a nice venue for the open mic. There's ample parking, lots of seating, a raised stage, good sound, and even a wooden dance floor for all you hula dancers. We met a few of the Hawaiian/local folks that frequent the place, and I think if we get the word out ahead of time we can attract a bigger crowd.

With that being said, I think we need to make a greater effort to come out and support this open mic. Both performer and audience attendance has been low over the past 6-7 months. The performances are always entertaining--we just need more folks to show up to perform and/or watch. This open mic has always welcomed performers at various skill levels, with the philosophy that it is supportive place to gain stage presence, try out new material, share the culture and aloha, and just plain have fun.

Because of this and other open mics like Temple Bar's, I've learned so much about performing, and my skill level and repertoire have improved dramatically. Yeah, in the beginning it's scary to go on stage, but trust me it does get easier and less nerve racking over time. The audience (particularly the ones with Hawaii ties) and fellow performers are always appreciative of the fact that you shared your music and had the guts to go up on stage. If you're too intimidated to play solo, bring along your friends--sometimes more fun that way too.

I'm trying to recruit more folks to come out to the open mic, whether they are performers or audience. It would be really nice to see some new faces. Bring along your friends, family, folks you kani with, hula dancers, etc., maybe offer to carpool, and pass along the word.

The next open mic is on Thursday, December 11. The December open mic traditionally has been well attended, with lots of Christmas and Hawaiian music. So, check it out and don't forget to bring your instrument!

Aloha,

Doug

Howzit Hiram,

Yes, I'm going to Temple Bar's "Mele Kalikimaka Party"/Open Mic on Dec. 7. Trying to get some other folks to come too. I'm psyched that you guys are the host band. Are you planning to do a Christmas sing/strum along at some point during the program? If not, we're gonna sing/strum along anyway! Nothing like the Temple Bar to get into the Hawaiian Christmas Spirit!

Aloha,

Doug

I'm passing out words only to Christmas carols for the audience(no chords on the sheets). I'm playing solo keyboard to back up the singing. It gives me more flexability to segway and string along a medly of carols to avoid delays between songs. You're welcomed to strum along and sing. Most of the songs are in F, C, and G. It will be fun. Looking forward to seeing you there. Aloha...
