Lol I'm sick of hearing my classmates play Jawaiian and having them not understand what good music really is. :( |

Peter, Zack, all you young guys. Us old futs are counting on you guys for figgah a way to keep the music alive. It is so important! It is such an important part of the culture. I have never seen any place where so many people play music of one type or another. Whole families have one who plays guitar, one who plays `ukulele, one on bass, etc., etc.
And even though the folks may seem to like Jawaiian, hip-hop, and other kinds of modern music, they always like the old stuff, too. I see plenty young folks on you tube singing, playing ukulele or slack key or just singing the songs from long ago (or at least to them long ago).
One good thing is that at UH, you can even take classes in Hawaiiana, `olelo, slack key, etc. Instructors like Peter Medeiros and Vickie Holt Takamine and Keola Donahey and so many other knowledgeable folks have worked very, very hard all their lives so this knowledge does not die out.
I was talking to Martin Pahinui about the next generation of traditional Hawaiian musicians from his `ohana. I asked him a couple of years ago what his boys were doing and he said disgustedly, "rock & roll". I told him the same I tell eveyrone, just wait a bit, kids always come back to their roots. No shame in liking other stuff, too. After all, remember Martin playing with your father, Cane Fire. Martin playing "Jealous Guy" with his brothers. He was a rocker, too. Can take the old stuff and let it be your kumu, the foundation, the roots, and let it grow into something bigger. Lord knows, your Papa did plenty innovative things with music, but still always the foundation of the old ways with respect for the history and culture.
You are the future of Hawaiian music. You/we/Taro Patch `ohana will find more young folks for you to jam with. Go check out kopaikea on you tube. I think he goes to BYU, but can sing one great leo ki`eki`e fo realz. |

I meant to say above that Martin's boys played at the Gabby kanikapila -- you were there. Not so much rock & roll, yeah? His son Gabby is supposed to be the family lead for doing the kani again in 2009, but you have probably talked to Cyril about that.
Point being that they are mighty good at the old stuff even if they were into more modern stuff as well.
We are going to find you some guys for playing with. Ha-ha. You wouldn't want girls to play with would you now? |

I know Gabby and Kali. They're not in the picture for me right now. Uh........... girls + music = potential trouble haha. The Beatles were smart enough to make that a rule until John brought in Yoko and we all know what happened after that haha. |

Re: girls - what about Rachel Akaka for guitar. She can play nice and sing nice, too.
Think how good was Olomana before Haunani and then think how good they were with Haunani, chicken skin.
Do you have transportation, you could travel elsewhere on the island? |

Awwwwww, I wish I lived in Hawai'i Nei. I'd be all over doing a kanikapila with you! Maybe I'll get to O'ahu some day. I'll let you know. Will you be on Moku O Keawe in February by any chance? I will. |

I'd suggest you go online to Ukulele Guild of Hawaii (UGH). At the club's annual meeting in Novermber, the club president puts on stage young (18 and below; except for Brittany Paiva) to show their stuff. Which means, Junior, the Club has a list of past 'showboaters' with WHOM you can jam. Example, Brittany was jamming with a bunch of young'uns at the 2005 convention and da buggahs were matching and passing her! I no bull-liar you, hea!

Peter - do not forget that this Saturday is the newly establishedkanikapila in Waipahu at the Higher Ground Cafe. Please see Lanette Abrigo's posting under Kanikapila Oahua. Mike Keale will be there and who knows who else. And I am sure you know about the workshop.kanikapila/Christmas party pot luck at the Pahinui homestead in Waimanalo. I know they are organized by folks older than you but maybe if you come then other young folks will come to. You gotta show them how cool it is or shaka or whatever the "{hep" word is (I dunno, 'cause I am makule) to play traditional Hawaiian music.
Anyhow - you guys get chance for two fun kanis this weekend. Lucky you live O`ahu. We gotta wait til August. That is a long time away. I am having hard time for playing `ukulele cause my fingers cracked from the cold dry weather. |
