Heads up you folks who live near Monterey CA -- Leabert Lindsey and Marcus Wong Yuen are coming your way! Leabert's CD has been long, long out of print...but his awesome falsetto (and yodeling!) are still very much intact. Count on Marcus to deliver his great slack key stylings from Hawai`i island, too. Here's da scoops:
Celebrate Hawaii's cowboy tradition at two sessions of the 10th annual Monterey Cowboy Poetry & Music Festival, at the Monterey Conference Center. The "Slack Key Talk Story" performance features singer and former rodeo rider Leabert Lindsey with guitarist Marcus Wong Yuen and bassist Bobby Pini, Dec. 6 at 1 p.m.; tickets are $35. The trio join Patty Clayton and El Teatro Campesino singer/storyteller James Barrera at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 7 for "Monterey to Mauna Kea"; tickets are $15. For details: http://www.montereycowboy.org

Man, I wish I had time to head down to Monterey next weekend! Leabert is without a doubt my favorite Hawaiian musician. I have a couple of his "Hapalaka" band cassettes as well as that mythical CD. He's also on the Warner Western "Na Mele o Paniolo" recording.
I first heard him sing in the Star Market parking lot in Kailua, Kona many years ago. Long story-- but suffice it to say he sang the most beautiful a cappella version of Sanoe I have ever heard. Later, Bradda Matt, Leabert & I played music all night long. It was my introduction to real back porch slack key and Hawaiian music. Ya might say it changed my life.
Leabert's the real deal-- a paniolo with a heritage going back for generations. And Monterey is credited with being the port from which the original "Spanish" cowboys sailed to Hawai`i. So this should be a great couple of days.

Even here in Hawai`i, it's a rare treat to see/hear Leabert in person -- lucky if you live near Monterey. Great guitarist, singer, falsetto stylist and (attention ladies) one HANDSOME paniolo!
Don't know his voice? Listen to a short clip of "Ka`ena": http://www.mele.com/hawaiianMP3s/452_09.mp3

It was a rare treat indeed! I'm such a Hawaiian music junkie and never had the opportunity to see Leabert or Marcus live and in person, not even when visiting the Big Island. Leabert's self-titled CD is one of my very favorites, if not THE favorite of my large Hawaiian music collection. His versions of "Pu`uanahulu" "Sanoe" "Ka`ena" and particularly "Honesakala" are a feast for the ear. I outright weep every time I listen to Honesakala. To see him here LIVE in Monterey was a dream come true. I was there for both the Saturday and Sunday show, and they got a rousing standing ovation both days, so I know it wasn't just me loving the performances! Despite the discrepancy in ticket prices, the Saturday show was the better of the two. There were filler artists on Sunday and I only wanted to see Leabert, Marcus, and Bobby. Did I mention that Marcus Wong Yuen is a fabulous slack-key guitarist? His voice reminds me of Dennis Kamakahi. His wife Hau'oli is a fabulous hula dancer - Marcus danced "Ulupalakua" with her on Sunday. It's a shame that both Leabert and Marcus CDs on Jus' Press Records (produced by Led Ka`apana) are out of print. :-( Those of you who were not there - you REALLY missed it!!! But we are angling to bring the Hapalaka Band back soon for your listening enjoyment.

What a weekend!!! First I get to interview Leabert, Marcus and Bobby Kini (great bassist with a dry but non-stop sense of humor) on KAPU-lp FM in Watsonville and enjoy a "private" musical performance to boot. Then on Saturday an amazing show and talk story in Monterey. Sunday comes and we were treated to ANOTHER show, with time shared with Western Stars Patty Clayton, Juni Fisher and Mike Beck. I've pretty much ignored Western Music until now, but when Patty (who works as a nurse on Moloka`i, Maui, and Oahu 3-4 months of the year) sang Melveen's "Paniolo Country" you could have knocked me over with a feather. I met her in the hall later and got a warm hug. Woo Hoo!!!!
But certainly Leabert and Marcus were the top treats for me. I have their Cds, but as we all know, IT AIN'T THE SAME. I was sooo happy to hear that L. is back playing and touring again after undergoing personal tragedy. He recently retired from his day job and promised he'd be back to the Central Coast of CA soon. It seems they all had a good time as well.
Since you can't buy their Cds (out of print) you CAN buy Holo Holo Paniolo, a dvd about the history, culture, lifestyle, and music of the Paniolo. Leabert and Marcus and Hau'oli appear a number of times singing and dancing (Hau`oli), and singing by Braddah Smitty, Sonny Lim, Kunia Calderia, Keven Kealoha, Lono, Mike Beck, and Keola Beamer is included as well. My congratulations to J & S Productions for producing a dvd which teaches, entertains, and excites. I'll watch it again and again.
Watch the calendars for news of when The Hapalaka Band returns. Don't miss them next time. A hui Hou, Bruddah Bill |

Great news -- Leabert's new solo CD "Only in Our Hawai`i" has been released! It was actually released on Hawai`i island in December (to make the Dec 31 deadline for Na Hoku Hanohano consideration).
Karen and Leabert contacted me last week -- they don't want to deal with a distributor, so the CD is available only at Parker Ranch Store (Waimea), directly from Leabert (at his performances), and here.
Love that paniolo's falsetto!!
