Although I haven't found anything in print, I heard through the coconut wireless that Uncle Kindy Sproat passed away this morning.

The gentleman was a national treasure! He knew more songs than anyone ever knew existed. He was such an inspiration to me, to become a "song collector". I loved to hear him talk story on his recordings, telling us stories behind the songs he sang. I loved his falsetto, I loved his zest for life, I loved his `ukulele playing. I am sure he will be singing away in that beautiful falsetto up in heaven with Aunty Genoa. I am glad that a lot of his mana`o got documented.

Our sincere condolences to his `ohana.

Aloha `oe, Uncle.

Me ke aloha

A very great loss. His contributions were enormous. I highly recommend getting a copy of a DVD done by Edgy Lee called "Paniolo O Hawaii, Cowboys of the Far West". There is also a 2 cd set put out by the Hawai'i State Foundation On Culture and The Arts, called "Na Mele Paniolo, Songs of Hawaiian Cowboys". They both have Kindy featured very heavily.

After having seen him, and heard his voice on these recordings, and feeling the love he had for the Paniolo lifestyle, I feel very sad that he is gone.

"The music of the Hawaiians, the most fascinating in the world, is still in my ears and
haunts me sleeping and waking."
Mark Twain
