I thought I’d share some YouTube links of my friend Evan Tom and his band. At only 14 years old, Evan is one of the most talented musicians (‘ukulele, guitar, steel guitar, bass, etc.) I’ve seen here in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The other members of the band are also excellent musicians: sister Lauryn (‘ukulele, hula), uncle Marc (guitar), and my buddy Joe Ho (‘ukulele). Evan, Lauryn and Joe are students/former students of Taropatch’s Hiram Bell. All of the band members, as well as the rest of the Tom ‘ohana, are some of the nicest, down-to-earth folks you’ll ever meet.

In addition to his musicianship, what’s really impressive is that Evan does all of the arrangements for the band and adds a lot of originality to the pieces while still staying true to the songs. Here are some clips of Evan and the band:

- Temple Bar’s Dec. 7, 2008 “Mele Kalikimaka Party/Open Mic”: “Sleigh Ride” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bx-vaIpdLB0&feature=related ; “Ka Iwa” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBoapO-HigM&feature=related .

- Temple Bar, Sept. 2008 “Aloha Sunday/Open Mic”: “Kaulana O Hilo Hanakahi,” featuring Bruddah Joe Ho on lead ‘ukulele—real sweet brah! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IusnCLIA6IE&feature=related .

- L&L Restaurant (I think), May 2007: “On Fire”--13 year-old Evan, with Lauryn and Uncle Marc, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vdsgjnKf6mI&feature=related . Also, "Chinatown" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABbtqHVac-I&feature=related .

- San Francisco Aloha Festival, August 2006: “Kawika”--12 year-old Evan with I believe Hiram Bell and his Hailama 'Ukulele Institute backing him up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvsjtfvZAXw&feature=related .

Keep an eye out for these guys!

Aloha,
Doug
