Hau`oli Makahiki Hou! New Year - new time for Duke and Jay and Shawn and Zack and all you guys to make a new video for You Tube. And you know what Auntie wants -- Hokule`a Star of Gladness" because Jay is my Hokule`a.
And 2009 should be the year of the Jesse Tinsley for real honest to goodness genuine CD issuance. You got plenty songs to choose from, Jesse. But my two personal all time favorites, wait, maybe three all time favorites..., oh wait, make that four all time favorites...well, shoot, ya'll know what I mean.
You Tube – week of January 4, 2009
Here are the first You Tube goodies of 2009. Enjoy! As soon as I can figure out how to use my new video camera, you just might see Paul Certo ontop da You Tube. Be warned!
We are starting off with some of the best `ukulele emsemble playing I have ever heard. Our friend Mike and his `ohana play both Hawaiian music as well as the music of their heritage, Puerto Rican. I love the bass that Mike plays. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSf5KuP7094 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7PYFkhzsHQ
Here is our friend Bolo entertaining folks on da Big Island: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zHU6v-8XrI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kbkW1gBKNc – Bolo doing Pua Hone. I do not know who is supplying the percussion for him.
Here is a film of Cyril’s Big Island workshops from November – all around the island – Waipi`o, Waimea, Kawaihae, etc. I really love the sounds at the end when Cyril is playing He`eia with Dennis Kamakahi. Chicken skin film feeling the mana of Hi`ilawe, singing it right there. Wow. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2lCYlLqbro
Raiatea in Japan http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DMm4kmjxeU
Keaumoku Louis from the 20’s on a 78 rpm “Wahine U`i”. Doesn’t sound like the one we are used to hearing Gabby sing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PG-S--zB-Q
Mama Loa sings “My name is Mama Loa” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNvAtDu40DM
Here is a whole bunch of newer stuff from Timi, Emily and Quin Abrigo, including some jamming with Mihana Souza and some Kani at Higher Ground. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=abrigo+ohana&search_sort=video_date_uploaded

Here is one more I forgot to post. It is by Ken Bank and Keonepax (John Pak) and is a cyber-jam. I do not know how they did their magic, but this opens up another option for our TP `ohana to jam. That way young Peter-Boy can jam with young folks all over the world. And us old futs can cam with young folks all over the world!

In regards to some of the first ones you posted here:
I know that slow song entitled "Wahine U'i," as well as the fast one. My favorite version of the slow one is the one by Linda Dela Cruz. Wow!
Loved that version of "Hi'ilawe!"
A question for you all: How do you feel about the audience clapping on two and four during Hawaiian songs that are in 4/4 time? If I had to pick a side, I probably wouldn't consider it a good idea, although I do have mixed feelings about it. I'm glad that the audience is enjoying the music, but at the same time, I think that it takes away from the nahenahe style of the mele. What do you guys think?
And btw, the comment about the pronunciation sucking was from Kamalani, who put the video up. I may get a youtube account in the future. I don't know yet, but you will know if I do. |
He kehau ho'oma'ema'e ke aloha.
