I received this letter from Cathy's friend. He asked me to pass it on to the Taro Patch Community:
Aloha Bob, Mahalo a nui for your help. here are some details Aunty Cathy Howe (Kalikolehua) has been in hospital since a 5hr knee replacement surgery on 12/11. She has had complications because of infections which required two additional surgeries. She has very hard time with drugs, pain and frustration. Her spirit is understandably low and she misses the Hawaiian/slack key community greatly. She asked me to let everyone know why she has not been around. She is at Marin General Hospital and will be transferred to a recovery facility tomorrow or the next day. So if anyone would like to send her good wishes you can email me. I see her every day so I will print out any mail and take it to her. My email is: Sk8erJR @ aol.com. Prayers are certainly in order and would be very much appreciated. Mahalo nui loa, John Thomas (Loko)

I had hoped that Cathe's surgery would go well. My thoughts go out to her. Hang in there, Cathe!
Wanda, I have heard stories about both successes and horrors about knee replacements, which is why my Larry won't have it done for a while and why we will be missing ski seasons until he finally gets it done. You know, by then, I may be too old to ski! Grumble.... But there is always a risk involved. Aloha nui loa, Julie |

Julie, I provide services to senior retirement facilities and therefore have been in contact with many people who had knee replacements. The VAST majority go very well, with reasonably speedy recovery, especially if people are somewhat slim and in shape. The kind of complications it seems Cathy has, at least in the SJ area, are very rare. However, I would urge people to do it one at a time - recovery for a double could be very difficult and often takes much longer that both done individually. |

Paul has a cousin, my age (56) who has had both of her knees replaced, I think about 4 years apart. She said she would have them both done at the same time if she had it to do all over again, although she said the docs don't advise it. Either way, it is a procedure she highly recommends because she said you just do not realize how terribly bad your knees are until you have one that does not hurt. She said people get it done when the discomfort of having the surgery and the rehab is less than the pain and discomfort of the knees themselves. When you are tired of the pain, you get it done. For Paul, we have to wait until he retired (hopefully next April), now that we have waited the two years since his knee infection. Doc said no replacement surgery for at least two years after the infection (MRSA).
But Cathe - if you are out there -- we are pulling for you. Put some good music on the stereo and think good thoughts. It will get better, day by day. |

I just received this update:
Cathe is now at Smith Ranch Care Facility in Marin county. Her bedside phone number is: 415 446 3944. Healing of the infection seems to be going well though she will be on IV antibiotics for a couple of more weeks. She will probably not be going home until the antibiotics are complete PT is going slowly because the knee must remain immobilized in a brace. she has gotten a number of emails and she sends back her mahalo and aloha. Thank you both for notifying the community. Mahalo a nui, Uncle John

I just received this message from Cathe. As you see things are much better after a trying time.
Aloha kakou!
Mahalo for all you kind messages and support, it kept me going during a very difficult time. I really appreciate it. This has been one of those experiences you never imagine could happen to you - or anyone else.
But there is good news, I am still at the Smith Ranch Care Facility, and will be re-evaluated on Monday for release; should go home on Tuesday. Can''t tell you how happy that makes me!!!! Between the three operations and the hospital and this place I haven't been home since December 11th. Talk about having some catching up to do!
Don't know how soon I will be able to drive - the range of motion in my knee is slow to return as it had to be immobilized for so long. But that's quite an incentive, and I'm working hard - that will continue at home.
John Thomas has just bee a rock through this, as has my family who are local, and friends like yourselves have been great. John brought me a tenor 'ukulele and my Baby Taylor so there has been some music - he started bringing an 'ukulele down to the P.T. lab on the days that he was visiting, and we had music to share. Yesterday we hosted an Aloha Friday, and the staff wore aloha shirts and had leis to give the residents. Who says recovery can't be fun.
Can hardly wait to see you all at the Workshop - booked a room and my ticket, this is a main goal this year for me, to be there with all of you. Put me down as present, please Nancy? It's one of three goals toward which I am working.
So mahalo for all your support, it warmed my heart. Ou hui hou, Cathe/Kaliko
PS. I can't seem to post a message on Taropatch - could someone leave a message letting our friends know that there is good news? I'd be grateful. |
