It has been mighty slim pickins' the past few weeks. Az y I decided to put a video on the you tube as some of you may know from the posting down the list a bit.

Its time some of you folks put some more vids, like Dukie & Jay; Zack; PM, Jr.; Zippychip, Da Oddah Guyz.

But, here goes for this week.
You Tube, week of January 18, 2009

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvH3EaR0ypY - In case I haven’t pestered you personally or in case you did not see the post below, ta-da! This is our first time trying to do something for You Tube. Here is Paul playing Patrick Landeza’s beautiful “Kahuku Slack Key.” Duke, Ed and Kawikia – thanks so much for your encourangement and support. I’d like to thank my mother, who decided after a couple of dates that I was going to marry Paul (and I told her she was crazy). I’d like to thank my third grade teacher, Mrs. Williams, who threw me out of music lessons because I stunk at the violin. I’d like to thank my husband, for playing music every day of the almost 36 years that we have been married. I’d like to thank Patrick Landeza for teaching Paul for a whole week at the Augusta Heritage Guitar Week (and for letting us drive him around to get stuff for the lu1au. I’d like to thank….

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_Pw0t3SiEw – Jesse Tinsley doing Green Lantern Hula. Wow!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Y1El8ue_FU - An interesting rendition of Kou Kaula `Ili with steel drums and slack key guitar with pretty nice vocals. Guitar, Vocal: Yoshi Doi, Steel-Drum: Manto Watanobe, Videographer: Brian Elms http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9iO9zUSx30k - Same folks “Holau Medley”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxE5FRNVVvs – A guy in Canada playing what he says is Chet Atkins Hawaiian Slack Key. He has no idea what song he is playing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWxFa4GM7AM – These are the same folks singing “Ka Wailele o Nu`uanu”.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uv-b0zi9ibM - Salomila and here is the same guy doing Patrick Landeza’s “Pilipuka”.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOo-JRpV_mY – Led and Mike Ka`awa at Richmond Folk Festival, of which the Emcee mispronounced both of their names. But I love when these guys do “No Ke Ano `Ahi`ahi”. Mike sings it with great mana.

`Opihi Moemoe.

In an article in Guitar Player Magazine circa. 1975, Chet commented on the tune and not knowing its real title. Chet is one of my heroes, but he also obviously wasn't listening hard enough to his mentor (Gabby) with regard to tempo, feel, and swing. When Chet plays it, it is no longer slack key; it's country.

Coming from country steel guitar, sounding Hawaiian was one of my biggest challenges. I overcame it by listening, listening, and listening. Also some pointers from Alan Akaka, Danny Kaopuiki and Iwalene Kamahele helped. Now, when I play country, folks say I sound too Hawaiian (sigh).

The Chet piece is a derivitave/tribute/ripoff of "Opihi Moemoe" - too bad the player in the video didn't do just a bit more research, then he could have credited Uncle Leonard Kwan.

I'm not sure Atkins did his research...according to Dancing Cat he heard his caddy play the song while golfing in Hawaii and, without knowing the title, recorded "Hawaiian Slack Key" based on what he heard. Presumably the copyright issue was worked out after the fact.

My goal is to be able to play as well as people think I can.

Aloha Taropatch Ohana,

Would like to introduce you to our friend, affectionately know to my children as Uncle Kamaka. These You Tubes are from last year, but I wanted to make sure everyone got to see them. Uncle Kamaka is one of Emily's great inspirations, when you view these videos, you'll hear why. He will be at Pakele Live! to support the children next week Thursday if you would like to meet him. He recently moved to O'ahu, so we hope to be seeing a lot more of him in the future.

Eh, Lanet: We know all about Kamaka and we have posted his vids to share. We are all anxiously awaiting his CD. What a voice he has!!!! Tell him, not to get weirded out, but we have been watching him. Bwah-ha-ha. He already has a built-in fan-base. Soon as his CD is out, gonna get choke Taro Patch guys to buy it. Matter of fact tell him come join the `ohana. I am sure he has stories to tell. And he can help us with pointers on singing leo ki`eki`e and on playing `ukulele and then can relax on the lanai and wala`au.

Just like we were watching your keiki before you even knew about Taro Patch. If it is out there, if someone plays good music and someone hears it, it will get talked about over here in the lo`i.

Aloha Wanda,

I'm so happy to hear that he already has a good following here in the taropatch. I did invite him to join, I'm so excited to tell him he already has a fan base here. Got to tell you, hard to find people as wonderful as this young man. His heart is SO BIG, and when you meet him in person, you can feel it. He is the ultimate representation of the word aloha.

GIRL, if you ever have questions about Hawaiian language or history, he's the man! So humble and loving, hope he never changes.

Mahalo, Lanet
