On February 1, 2009 Hank Mauel posted the following message on Usenet news group rec.music.makers.guitar.acoustic:
quote: It is with great sadness that I write of the passing of Lance McCollum. He suffered an aortic aneurism early Sunday morning. He was rushed into emergency surgery at Auburn Faith Hospital but the damage was too massive to overcome.
Please pray for his wife Dawn and their children in this hour of need.
There will be no memorial sevice per his wishes. He will be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea over the Southern California area he surfed as a youth.
He will be greatly missed by a broad group of people, myself at the top of the list. He was a friend, mentor, musician, luthier and all around great guy.
Please direct any correspondence to my email and I will forward it to his wife, Dawn, at the appropriate time.

I know at least a few of us here have McCollum guitars. Lance was a dedicated husband and father as well as a passionate and intensely creative luthier. Our thoughts are with his wife and children.

Yes I also saw this. It is a terrible tragedy. Lance was too youg for this to happen. Fran, I remember that you introduced me to Lance when we were jamming at the HGF in 2007. Our sympathy to his family.

Andy told Sarah and me about Lance's death and I posted some remembrances in Hank's original thread. Lance wasn't just a guy I had build me a few guitars. There was a fairly long and good relationship there. He wrote a really nice inscription inside the first guitar that he made for Sarah in 1999(as did Hank in another). We were certainly in the periphery of his world, but the shock waves rippled out to us. Our McCollum guitars are Meghanns, as is Andy's, and that is the name of one of his young daughters, so it is mostly about the kids that I am thinking. You understand that most luthiers live on the hairy financial edge. No matter how expensive you think their guitars are for you to buy, there is precious little profit in it for them, or their family....

This news came as a complete shock. I meant to post here in the 'patch but didn't get a chance since I am traveling this week. Thanks Fran.
Owning a "pre-owned" guitar, I only had the pleasure of speaking to Lance once over the phone. Nice guy. I love the guitar that he built. My sympathy and prayers go out to Lance's family. |

My heart-felt condolences and aloha go out to his ohana and friends. May he always be remembered by the voice of his guitars. |
