I was reading Gregg’s (“Retro”) review of "‘Ikena" and surfed around the site a bit and saw this wonderful profile of my friend and fellow Taropatcher Maggie Matoba, http://www.northwesthawaiitimes.com/KP/kpjune08.htm . She’s going to kill me for drawing attention to her, but I’m so proud of the aloha she is spreading in the Northwest that I wanted to share it with the Taropatch 'ohana.
I met Maggie three years ago at Uncle George Kahumoku’s Maui Workshop. She is such a warm, friendly and low key individual that you wouldn’t expect her to be the real go-getter that she is. She is also very talented and was an easy recruit for our late night beach kanikapilas in Napili. One of my fondest memories was when she and I played “'Opihi Moemoe” in Ozzie’s class and we ended it somewhat abruptly but in unison (just like Leonard Kwan’s original). We got scoldings by Ozzie for not letting the group know we were going to close it out. Eh, no blame me, I was just following Maggie!
You go girl!
Aloha, Doug
