My dad played piano accordion, growing up in a Scandinavian community. His mom played some guitar, his dad played fiddle and piano. My grandpa had a band with 2 of his cousins and a couple other guys and played dances in the Skagit County area during the 1920s and '30s. My grandpa's father, back in Norway, was a fiddler. My mom played some accordion and keyboards and could sing harmony and was great at helping me figure out chord changes. Her mom played guitar and my grandma's mom played back in Sweden. My mom's dad played button accordion and was instrumental in getting me playing diatonic button box. My dad was a gifted wordworker and could draw. My mom was into crochet, sewing and when I was a kid, she thought nothing of recovering our furniture and helping out neighbors with similar projects.
After years of playing gigs from age 15 on, my dad told me that music is best played with friends, that only a few of the audience at any given time really "got it". I have a cousin that dabbled with guitar and harmonica and her son is now a good guitar player. Two other cousins had a late '50s- early '60s rock and roll band for a while.
Music was available when I was growing up. It's good for little kids to learn that people make music, not machines.
