Joking aside, what is the reason for referring to older threads?
Just because a thread is old doesn't mean it's dead! By adding to a previous discussion on a given topic instead of starting a new one it's easier to avoid repeating what's already been said while adding new info/opinions/comments. This also serves to keep everything in the same place for future reference.
