Two questions for the group...
What kind of music is Daniel Ho playing? If it is slack, I can not hear the connection. Is his style an advanced version of what slack key will become in the future?

| I'd categorize Daniel's music as "New Age." (At least what he played up until 3 or 4 years ago along with what he teaches in his book...I haven't listened to him since.) Pretty in a contemplative kind of way, but not slack key. |

From what I heard, I would call it "slack key influenced adult contemporary easy listening lite jazz". I wouldn't mind having that kind of music around to help my son sleep at night. :)

Ho's previous work with Hiroshima sounded like jazz to me. But he's a multi-talented musician who works a lot of genres in a lot of projects. His work on George Kahumoku's classic hula series is pretty jazzy, too, and sounds like he's channeling a young Jake Shimabukuro.

His own - the music he hears in his soul. It need not match anyone else's definitions, only his own creative drive. That's what artists do, whether or not the market will support it.
Daniel is a talented musician and producer in a wide range of styles, and a gentle person as well. If what he puts out as a recording doesn't resonate with your ears, move on. There are thousands of performers out there whose music doesn't speak to me, but I'm not going to waste my energies slagging them.
As for the "consensus of the majority of the most prominent Ki ho'alu artists today," please note that he was responsible for Grammy-winning releases that featured, among others, George Kahumoku, Jr., Ledward Kaapana, Dennis Kamakahi, Cyril Pahinui, Martin Pahinui, Owana Salazar, Keoki Kahumoku and Ozzie Kotani. They don't seem to have a problem working with him. |

| I wholeheartedly agree with Gregg. Daniel is a brilliant musician on a number of instruments. He is a warm caring person and delight to be around. It is great fun to kanikapila with him. |

I'm sure a lot of people feel this way, including Wayne Harada.
I think Daniel now has a big target painted on him simply because he has won so many times.
Since the Grammy's are such a big deal, there's always going to be someone who's not happy with who wins.
It's fun to debate the merits and demerits of everyone nominated. Those on this board probably know more about the range and breadth of Hawaiian music than the average (note I said "average") Grammy voter in this category. Let's just please try to stay pono, whether or not you think the person being jibed is or isn't. |

| Howzit,I just wanted to say I'm not questioning daniels ability as a musician,or as a person to be around,and kanikapila with.To me if you take the time to learn something like let's say making a hawaiian feather lei,when you finish making one there's a sense of pride and accomplishment,not to mention newfound respect for an art that is part of this unique culture.The original question was what kind of music is daniel playing,is it slack key?It wasn't about his character or his ability or what he's done for the hawaiian music at the grammys.With the original question in mind you should be able to answer that.Just remember the hawaiian feather lei.I hope that was pono enough. |

Seems like it's always a touchy issue when a cultural practice (i.e. slack key) is also a commercial enterprise. I think hula probably faces similar issues as a cultural practice that is also marketed and sold as a service/product in the market. What do you folks think about where the balance should be (if there should be a balance)? Should we refrain from selling products under the label of "slack key?" Is it ok to sell music under the product name of "slack key" as long as it's in a tuning other than EADGBE? Is there some criteria that should be met before we sell something and call it "slack key?" I'm not expressing any opinions, but am curious to hear what everyone thinks.
And of course, ditto on the comment about keeping comments civil. This community has always been remarkably good at that. |

| I don't think any of the comments were uncivil...passionate yes, uncivil no. And I don't think the touchy part of the issue has to do with a cultural practice being made into a commercial enterprise but rather when a cultural practice is exploited as part of a commercial enterprise. In this particular case there is no argument being made against Daniel as a musician or as a human being, but rather against his practice of using the slack key label to market music that isn't. And if we're in agreement that he is, in fact, doing so then I definitely don't think that's something that should be embraced. |
