This week’s guest on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis is Tunana da Band (Tarvin Makia and Ron Kuala’au). (“Tunana” is a personal family slang that means “we do with what we have and you‘ll get it when we‘re ready!”)
Tarvin (bass, vocals and composer) and Ron (guitar, ‘ukulele and composer) have been performing professionally for many years. Tarvin began with the group “Hauula,” and performed on the mainland - up and down the west coast, as well as locations like Lake Tahoe and Carson City, Nevada – and in Japan. He recorded a number of albums with Hauula.
Ron performed early on with his friend Brother Noland in a group called Solbrea. He played the strip in Waikiki for a number of years before joining the team of “Aloha” (Aloha Airlines), which allowed him the opportunity to perform in every state in the country! He also performed with Drums of the Pacific for 8 years, formed the group Koola in 1987, and has appeared on a number of different albums.
Tunana da Band recently released their first album “Hawaiian Melodies,” which has earned them several spots on the preliminary ballot for the 2009 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. For their Pakele appearance, they may be joined by some special guests…
