Getting my youtube fix tonight. Did you know that Keali'i Reichel's song Ka Nohona Pili Kai originally came from an Okinawan song titled Nada Sousou. Didn't know until I heard the song and thought that sounds familiar then remembered what the tune was. Checked his liner notes and sure nuf, there it was. Here's the group (which is called BEGIN) that originally did the song.

Here's another version sung by my now favorite Okinawan singer - Rimi Natsukawa.

These two are indeed lovely. What do the lyrics mean in Japanese, does anyone know? Same tune, but do the words mean the same thing?

What is the instrument she is playing? It sounds kinda sorta like a banjo.

Thanks once again, Derek for broadening our horizons.

The instrument she is playing is an okinawan instrument called a sanshin. It is a precursor to the japanese shamisen. Here's a wiki about it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sanshin

I believe only the melody was used by Keali'i. I found that Ozzie Kotani and Herb Ota Jr. also recorded the song too. Here's the translation:

furui arubamu (album) mekuri
arigatou tte tsubuyaita
itsumo itsumo mune no naka
hagemashite kureru hito yo
harewataru hi mo ame no hi mo
ukabu ano egao
omoide tooku asete mo
omokage sagashite
yomigaeru hi wa nada sousou

ichiban hoshi ni inoru
sore ga watashi no kuse ni nari
yuugure ni miageru sora
kokoro ippai anata sagasu
kanashimi ni mo yorokobi ni mo
omou ano egao
anata no basho kara watashi ga
mietara kitto itsuka
aeru to shinji ikite yuku

harewataru hi mo ame no hi mo
ukabu ano egao
omoide tooku asete mo
samishikute koishikute kimi e no omoi nada sou sou
aitakute aitakute kimi e no omoi nada sou sou

Translation:

Turning the pages of an old photo album,
I said a quiet thank you to you,
Who always encourages me in my heart
On a sunny day or a rainy day,
It's your smile that i remember
Even if memories dull out far away
I look for a trace, and when it comes back,
my tears fall down

Praying on the first star out
Has become my habit
And in the darkening sky,
I look for you with my full heart
In grief and in happiness,
It's your smile that i remmeber
If you can see me from where you are
then I live, believing that I can see you again

On a sunny day or a rainy day,
It's your smile that I remember
Even if memories dull out far away
Being lonely and missing you,
My fellings for you bring tears falling down
Wanting to see you, wanting to see you
My fellings for you bring tears falling down

There is also a movie of the same name based on the theme of the song. If you got nothing to do, you can watch it online. Just go to http://www.mysoju.com/nada-sou-sou/ and follow the links at the bottom. It was one of the top movies in Japan when it came out, just like the song.

Manoa DNA also recorded it, in both Hawaiian & Japanese, on their CD "No Place Like Home."

Yeah, you know Auntie is misty-eyed. That is most beautiful and poignant.

Okay, don't watch the movie unless you get one whole box of kleenex.

My friends and I tried to combine the Japanese and Hawaiian versions. In the process, we discovered that there's a slight difference between the two versions in the refrain, solved by adding a few "oohs." Anyway,in case you're interested in how we did it, please check it out:

John - that was really swell, the Hawaiian and the Japanese versions, with very sweet vocals. Way nice. Mahalo! We shoulda thought of you first as a resource.
