http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6HjyDG9nrc - Lei Day at Kapi`olani Park.
OK, I'll admit it. I am biased. But since I am the one typint the list, I guess I can shamelessly promotoe my husband. Here is UNko Paul playing Ozzie Kotani's "Kani Ki Ho`alu" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu3j3hcqMGc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUnwkVJkb_U - Here is our TP braddah/son/nephew Zack (slackkey808) while he was still in high school, playing Opihi Moemoe. Boy-oh-boy. This totally blows me away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTx_9FmgqO8 - and now here is Zack from this week playing a lovely Medley for us.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7PCmz5kCXE - Nathan Aweau singing one of the sweetest versions of Ka Wailele o Akaka that I have ever heard. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a mighty fine voice.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AddVikGDR7A A tutorial on how to play "Kaleohano" on the `ukulele.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jxaDa-RNEY - Mike Ka`awa & Analu Aina playing Haleiwa-Palolo-Kamoae Medley at the Honolulu Elks Club a couple of weeks ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9J5-u12fPzM Led playing "Radio Hula" at the Embassy Suites a couple of weeks ago. He makes the song sound like a brand new version every time, always a bit different, but always you can tell within two notes that he is getting redy to play.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jRUSMdZa_Q - This totally blew me away. I have never heard this before, but wow, the chicken skin I got from this. Brother Noland"Hawaiian Man". Not sure when it was filmed, but it was posted by Mountain Apple only a couple of weeks ago. Pure chicken skin.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8dZNBO4yAE This is Braddah Mike and his boys. He calls this UFO, it sounds kinda like Kaimana Hila to me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ECV-xcFzOY - This is Mike and his boys playing "Hawaiian Soul". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6Rhy2C2OZA - This is Mike and his guys playing "Maui Chimes". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PdxMZ5Gcjn8 - And this is Mike's piece de resistance this week - He`eia.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NUHKiWuQU0w - Darin Leong from "Nighttime with Andy Bumatai".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS3zSqCx1d8 and from that same show, Pilioha. Them guys get talent, choke talent.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf2PUb6VYow - Moana Chimes on `ukulele & steel.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PvoPLg9J9OE Kilima Hawaiians - Steel Guitar Rag
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHAURA-FWAI Jesse Tinsley singing a lovely rendition of "Nani Kaua`i" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHAURA-FWAI - Beautiful Mahealani Moon - Don't he just sing as sweet as you could ever ask for. Now if Duke dem can kani with Jesse, oh, what a sight that would be to see and hear.

Jon de Mello taped it while they were working on his new album a few months back (the album came out late March). It's the take that was used for the album, but with a different mix. |

Here is another one from Mike that I forgot to post, but it is way beautiful. It is called Makalapua. It is a song that I was not familiar with, but sure enough I had to look it up and start doing some research on it,. Chrai look it up on huapala.org. Ah, there is a mystery to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-5XaO6MVgw |

re: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6HjyDG9nrc - Lei Day at Kapi`olani Park. The pictures a fine, but the background music is a sad somment about the state of music in Hawaii. More and more of the clubs and hotels are switching to this kind of pop oriented music, while bands with steel guitars can't find work. When Bobby Ingano plays with Martin & tehm, he only gets fed because the trio had their pay cut from $150 each to $150 for the whole band. Hiram Olsen has retired because his gig at The House Without a Key (Halekalani) was reduced to once a week. The Mai Tai bar at the Royal Hawaiin no longer has music. No slack key or steel musician that I know can play music full time. It's sad. btw I was there hanging out in the HSGA tent. They had an afternoon concert, but that was not on the mian stage, which had pop and Jawaiian bands all day, except for the Royal Hawaiin Band at 9 am to open the festival. Ate onlicious luau stew, though, and the leis were fantastic! |

Jack - I felt the exact same thing when I saw the video, but I put it up anyhow because I wanted other folks to lament the state of music along with me. I mean, some of it is OK, but......
Derek - wow, that was a find. Wowie! That goes to show you what I was talking about in that other thread about it is all in the family. Thanks for pointing the way to the music. |

I think that is Kapena in the background of the video... Which, to me, means it could've been worse (like some full on Jawaiian-98.5-100.3 nonsense. . . but I probably shouldn't go there).
I also think it is sad that lots of the "true" Hawaiian musicians are struggling.

Ho'okani
Mistake in the title & notes - the first number is Opihi Moe Moe, played hell bent for election, as we would expect from a student of Led's. |

Sorry to contradict you Jack but it is Uncle Fred Punahoa's "Mauna Loa Slack Key" which is not actually slack key because it's played in standard tuning in the key of A. I play about half of it.For me it's a great song to listen to but I don't like the "Thin little standard tuning sound" I get when I try to play it. In my opinion the song sounds best with choke reverb & chorus.According to Ledward he first learned to play it on his "kerosene powered guitar"
