Is it just me, or have you also noticed an increase in the number of self-promoting posts here lately?
Perhaps it is time for us all to remember the meaning Pilahi Paki affixed to each letter in the word "aloha" (which Andy uses to describe taropatch posters) and take them to heart -- especially "ha`aha`a":
Aloha - mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return Akahai - meaning kindness to be expressed with tenderness Lokahi - meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony `Olu`olu - meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness Ha`aha`a - meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty Ahonui - meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance
A one-time post about your event or your project is fine...but how about just leaving it at that, please?

I have no problem with musicians who are struggling to make a living letting us know on this forum about opportunities to experience their art. After all, how would we know about the opportunities that arise such as Cyril's Waimanalo Kanikapilas or the Song Writer's workshop on Kaua`i? I mean, Taro Patch is the means by which people involved in this type of music know that information is available to inform the members about various opportunities and ways in which we all can avail ourselves.
We do have members, however. who are guilty of shameless self-promotion. But in the Hawaiian music business, it may take agressive measures like that in order to be able to continue making opportunities available. There are those who post only when they have a show or workshop to promote. If that is how they wish to use the services of this fine forum, that's OK by me. But, I must be frank in saying that somehow putting the same message in front of the people every day, every day, every day is a wee bit much. I have recognized those who are the ones who do that sort of thing and thusly I do not read their subsequent posts on the same topic. No one has to read any of the messages. The technology of how this forum has been designed let us see at a glance what topics have new posts since the last time. If you know it is a subject which may be something you do not care to read, it is quite easy to skip over it. On the other hand, you cannot blame a business person for trying to make a living. People gotta put food on the table, yeah?
A word to the business people, promotoers, artists, etc. who post here -- you may find a bigger, broader customer base if you wala `au with the potential customers in the Talk Story forum sometimes, to make yourself "one of the regular guys". instead of being branded as one hwo is guilty of shameless elf promotion. People become your customers much more readily if they feel you are one of their friends from Taro Patch. `Ohana supports `ohana. Customers can take or leave a product, but when they change from customers to 'ohana, they are with you all the way. |

Retro, KKCR is a community radio station here on Kaua`i, listener-supported and volunteer-driven. I include that link in hopes that folks will tune in, and pledge to keep the radio station on the air. No income for me from it. And please note that I'm not posting "listen to KKCR"...just using it in my sig text.
Wanda, you stated the situation (and alternatives) beautifully!

Not passing judgment on the content itself, Auntie (I was employed in non-commercial radio from 1976-1995, and have been a volunteer at a listener-supported and volunteer-driven community radio station since 2001, playing Hawaiian music) - only pointing out that one person's sharing of information is someone else's self-promotion overkill.
Everyone feels their own project is valuable, important or noble. Most of the folks here do what they do for the love of the art, not for the money, and there is no perfect formula for the most effective promotion. And folks who post here are, for the most part, not experienced professional promotions people - so I cut 'em a lotta slack in their trying to get the word out.
You are often the first to post here about a great activity or event or tour in which you are not personally involved --- and I think that's fantastic. You have a strong connection with so many artists, you get the first scoop, and you share it with the rest of us immediately.
Lastly - I get a little squirmy when I read posting etiquette advice from people who are not the administrators or moderators of a particular discussion board. I believe it is pono to let those who operate the board do their jobs, and if we have suggestions on how we feel they could do something different, we should share it with them directly, and let them choose whether or not it is appropriate. |

I have no problem with anyone promoting themselves here as long as:
1. It's relevant to Hawaiian music. 2. They post in the correct forum. 3. They only start one thread per event/product.
To be perfectly honest I'm more annoyed by 3 lines of self-promotion in a signature line where one would do than by someone over-promoting something in a thread in the Performance/Event Announcements & Reviews or Recording Announcements & Reviews forum. But I'm not going to lose any sleep over either. |

For me it's animated gif's and large pictures in the signature line but I can easily live it if it pleases a member to do so. However, I bet I could find some really important things that bother me way more. LOL! |

I want to learn about every new Hawaiian music event, inside and outside of Hawaii, so I love it when people and organizations announce their events here. It's one of the main reasons I joined the Taro Patch Forum and one of the many reasons I visit every day.
I host an unrelated forum myself so I understand why most forum administrators hope people who use their forums to promote events and products will also participate other discussions, but either way, this forum is one of the best places to learn about Hawaiian music events and related products and I would never want that to change.
As far as over-promoting an event... of course it's possible to do that, and maybe not always easy for event producers to be sure when that line has been crossed. I'm not offended when it happens but I wouldn't want to see the forum filled with *too* many duplicate posts. And like others, I don't click on a post if I have good reason to think it's a duplicate. That being said... I would rather see too many event announcements then miss something important!

I hadn't noticed a problem but a reminder of the Aloha Law is never a bad thing. There are a lot of mainlanders here (myself included) so I am not sure how many people were able to see "Life in These Islands" on TV. It featured Aunty Pilahi Paki. If you'd like to hear Aunty speak, the website has a link.
I am fortunate that this community has great people in it. Knowlegeable, respectful and self-policing which makes my job easier. |
