You Tube – week of May 24, 2009
Auntie’s back! I can tell you that the ICU of a hospital needs to pipe in much better music over the PA. That new age harp kinda stuff just doesn’t cut it. Coupled with all the moaning and groaning and whining of the patients, , das ist cacophony! Dorothy got it right in Wizard of Oz…there’s no place like home. My kitty must have missed me. She has now turned into the Velcro kitty. She will not leave me alone. Paul is not quite as velco-ish, but I am certain he didn’t like having the bed all to himself.
One thing I gotta say before we begin. I do believe it has been quite some time since we have seen a video by No`eau. I know he has been busy with all kinds of gigs such as the Folklife thing up there in Seattle, but hey, Al, you are retired, yeah? Let’s see some new videos. Maybe Pu`uanahulu something lidat to show off your lovely leo ki`eki`e
This week, I shall start out by asking you to check out Paul’s first attempt at showing the public his Hawaiian language skills by playing and singing “Hula o Makee”. And yes, Jesse, Auntie gots to get a tripod. I ordered one for the Flip, but it is a short stubby little buggah. I know Paul has one in the closet somewhere. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36N6zfT5dHI Those schooled in the language, please let us know if you detect mistakes in pronunciation, phrasing, etc. We want to learn to do it right.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fmWz83EWUEw – Here is one that Dukie calls “Mistah Sleepah” – our own Hookani (Derek) who will blow you away with his 12-string playing and his leo ki`eki`e as he sings He Ali`i No `Oe. You are gonna LOVE it. And here he is doing “Ka Uluwehi O Ke Kai” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ip58XtrJE0s You are gonna love that one, too. Wow, Derek. I just cannot imagine how wonderful it must be at the kanikapilas you guys have. With Duke and Jay and Shawn and Zack and You and Terry and all them other talented folk, it has got to be better than s-e-x. Maybe.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzcZx8A0YvU – The Rose Choral Ensemble. Paul and I were turned on to their music by Amy Stillman. Their CD of choral selections is an important piece for any serious student of Hawaiian music.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXzL-XRAaRQ A guy named Phil treating us to 10 or 11 snippets of various mele to show off his repertoire. He plays some swell `ukulele and has a great falsetto. This is a really fun vid to watch. Can tell he musta listened to Iz a lot.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ib0uKtY8pII – Ledward, playing ever so sweetly. I cannot remember what this song is, I apologize. Please someone help me out. Is it the one about the girl with the pretty feet?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NFA5ufS-S8 – Ryan Tang playing Kipahulu. He has a web site some of you may have visited: PlayHawaiianMusic.com.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STyqePGKP5Y – Jesse Tinsley has a bunch of newer vides since last time I posted. This one is “Hanalei Moon”. Ooooh, Mrs. Jesse must be swooning when he sings this to her. Also check out Jesse’s channel for all the other new ones he has posted, including a great version of “Panini Puakea”. http://www.youtube.com/user/JesseTinsley ------------------ Iz Birthday tributes:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGDTeTfpXGg – This is from Keonepax. Very touching.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPIC-UmNeGw – This is a slide show to music put up by Mountain Apple.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=num8cgfoWzM – A young man giving honor to Iz at the anniversary of Iz’ birth. “Hawaiian Like Me”. ----------------------- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gv8t-2fJ1_Q – Some slack key baritone `ukulele – He Aloha no Honolulu and Island Style medley.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UatNaAvuui8 – A group of young folk singing “Ku`u Home o Kahalu`u” – some really nice harmonizing. It is good to see young folk playing the “old time kanikapila music” as he calls it. That’s OK – as long as they play it and remember it and value it.

Well, actually that Doug Fitch one was posted by Michi and she has some other new ones that are swell. One of them is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwsnvrcsdnM featuring Gavin Kaina. Auntie does not know him, but he makes nice music, that's a fact. Does anyone know him or know about him? In this vid they were playing at the Elks club.
Question: I know Mike Ka`awa, sometimes Doug Fitch, Led, other guys play at the Elk's Club. Is it a public venue or do you gotta be one of them grand poobah kinda guys? |

Hey Aunty, the one you posted was of Led was "Slack Key Lullaby" but there are two others and I think they are "Opihi Moemoe" and "Nani" but I'm not 100% sure on "Nani" since I haven't watched it in a while. |

I love this CD. Kim's sister Kelly was one of the first alaka`i with whom I studied hula severeal years ago. Their folks run Sueoka Store in Kōloa on Kaua`i. |
