It looks like Uncle Sonny used his thumb and index finger: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTxGsxqoEGQ .

And here is Sonny using a bit of different technique at the same show. This is one of finest versions of Alekoki I've heard (and the audio quality is not that great). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDfAdRlWEYE&feature=related

Can anyone confirm the identity of the singer - she's listed as both Myrna English in the description and Myra English in the tag list.

Sonny is using his two-finger (thumb and index) technique with fingers planted, but varying that with a downstroke strum for a rhythm figure. I was struck by how similar his motion is to Ledward's when strumming, relaxed but forceful. And how different their hand positions when picking - Ledward doesn't plant his extra fingers as Sonny does.

Fran,
Her name was Myra English (a.k.a. the Champagne Lady after her signature song Drinking champagne). She performed with Sonny Chillingworth for many years at the Blue Dolphin Room in the Outrigger Hotel. Duke's Canoe Club is now the current tenant.

Playing with Sonny was always a treat. Sonny would plant/ rest his fingers like many of us do at times. It never stopped him from sounding good. If he was playing rhythm, there was never any question as to where you were in a song. And, he could switch from playing rhythm to lead in an instant.

Bill Mack, who wrote "Drinking Champagne" as a country song, tells about meeting Myra at the Outrigger. He offered her a glass as a "thank you" for the royalties. Myra the said to the crowd "Champagne ofr the house, complements of Baill Mays, who wrote the song.", which he immediately regretted his complement.

Thanks, Peter. Lynn is quite the fan of the bubbly, "Drinking Champagne" is her unofficial theme song, so I got her the "Champagne Lady" CD a few years ago. I suspected a typo and appreciate the confirmation.

Sonny never fails to amaze - the more I learn the more I appreciate his artistry.

Well, Bruce, my small comment has nothing to do with champagne and other delights.
Only my two cents: I play naturally with thumb and two fingers. I find takes determined concentration and effort to include the ring finger, and, I don't think I've ever used the pinkie.
Therefore, thumb and two seems like a nice compromise; whereas thumb and one is a severe challenge, not surprised Led can do it!
Thumb and three is masterful (as illustrated by the masters) and does open up possibilities if you have the coordination/ho'omanawanui.

Thanks everyone for your replies. Seems it's pretty common to use thumb and two fingers, so for now I won't worry about "neglecting" the ring figner. Still, I'll be on the lookout for a particular note or passage in a particular song where it might come in handy (really, no pun intended).

By the way, Sarah...I don't think I've ever posted my real name. Are you saying that the "what is my name in Hawaiian" website I went to was right? Kind of wondered if they just made it up.

You guys all use your fingers? I guess I'll have to try that; I must have missed a lot along the way.

If you back up a page you will see that we have been giving serious consideration to the use of no fingers. You would have to be a really good guitar player to pull it off though.
I wonder if you could eliminate the guitar too...

Ok, check this out:
No fingers, no guitar, Bam! you got Air Slack.
Any YouTube pioneers out there?

I did it!

But I took it one step further - no video camera either.

One of the best blues players I ever saw, outside the gates at the San Francisco blues festival, had no fingers on either hand, just stumps. He had a slide taped to his left and a pick taped to his right. Not slack key, but his lap steel was amazing, nonetheless. If you can sing and keep a rhythm, no one will watch your fingers.
