Mamaki leaf tea was used traditionally to lower blood pressure. A neighbor (Robert Kahele), long passed, who was raised by his grandmother who was a kahuna laupa'au, told me many years ago that the modern trend towards casually consuming mamaki tea was unwise. According to him, it was foolish to discount the power of mamaki to lower one's blood pressure just because it was an herb, and use by people with normal blood pressure was dangerous.
Of course, for the many who have high blood pressure, it would be highly beneficial. Myself, I have always had low to very low blood pressure, so on Robert's advice I have never tried Mamaki (except to nibble the berries- on some plants they are quite sweet and good!) |
