This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we welcome 2010ʻs Nā Hōkū Hanohano Female Vocalist of the Year Mailani, and Ashley Soderberg - Miss Teen Hawaiʻi International for 2011!

Known for her collaborative efforts as a member of the hugely popular, Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award-winning duo Keahiwai (who released five albums) and the rocking trio, MighTy J, Mailani’s self-titled debut solo album earned her Female Vocalist of the Year honors at the 2010 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. The album featured innovative yet respectful interpretations of Hawaiian standards, as well as several original compositions in both Hawaiian and English. Her blend of the contemporary and the traditional delighted aficionados of both genres.

Mailani continues to challenge herself musically. Her second solo album, ʻAina (released this year) again includes a mix of contemporary songs and traditional Hawaiian pieces (including an original song co-written with Keola Donaghy). Those who love Hawaiian music are impressed with the way her obvious love of her homeland and respect for the generations that came before shines through brightly.

Primarily self-taught, Ashley inherited her passion for music from her family, carefully listening at family gatherings and then going home and mimicking what she’d heard. She taught herself to sing and play ʻukulele at age seven, and later studied chord progressions and scales. She also began writing songs and composing music. Her first official “training” came in high school, where as a freshman she enrolled in an advanced Polynesian music class. She soon taught herself to play guitar and bass, then, after studying chromatics, piano – all by the close of her sophomore year. She now helps teach the music classes she takes. Her vocal style is soft, smooth and easy listening, with an acoustic vibe and a desire to sing jazz and soul, although she loves all genres.
