Good thoughts. I guess I'm not sure (pretty inexperienced) how to decide where the sweet spot is. I suspect this comes with a good deal of playing, right? Sort of like being in love - "When you get there you'll know". Or maybe not. Is there a way to tell?
Well, I lived with the unmodified Seagull for a month and have dearly loved playing it but the high action still bugged me.
Today I carefully loostened the strings, popped out the bridge pins, removed the ball end of the strings from the bridge and pulled out the bridge saddle. I put it in a jig that would assure an even removal of .040 inch (1mm) of material and lowered the action. This gave me .020 inch (.5mm) lower at the 12th fret. I was even able to keep the original strings!
Result? I'm not there yet but this is almost a different guitar! I need to play it some more but there is much less effort needed to fret the notes. Legato gets easier because I can hold notes longer and it's less frequent that I touch strings next to those I fret. So far, there's no buzzing even with the guitar tuned to Leonard's F (F wahine).
I may take another .020 inch off but I think I'll live with it for a while before I do.
