Aloha again Tp-er's, It's that time again, it's time for me & Pua-ho's yearly visit to the islands, (has it been a year already?)...anyways, this time it's Oahu & Big Island, and as always, I pack my usual two guitars...one to play, and one I search for Slack key players, or players of note to autograph. So, if anybody knows someone worth hunting down for autographs over there, let me know. They don't always have to be a performer. Last year's visit was really good as I was able to get quite a few including Bla Pahinui, (took me 3 years to find him...thanks again Cyril!!!). Everybody have a healthy 2012, on this first Aloha Friday of the year. ~slkho

Thumbstruck and I will be on Oahu 1/19-30. We stay Kailua, accross the street from Doung Fitch. We'll be sitting in with the Keawe Family at the Moana Terrace and with Led at the Kona Brewery. We're also going to the Bishop Museum kanekapila on the 29th. Look us up. |

Is there a picture of your autographed guitar anywhere? I'd love to see it.
Glad you don't play the pipe organ, eh? |

Slkho - you may want Duke Domingo, Derek Ho'kani Higa, Shawn Machida, Samson Sang and Jonathan Castillo; also the Abrigo 'Ohana. If you check out the Waimea Valley Kanikapila on the 3rd Sunday and the Bishop Museum Kanikapila on the last Sunday of the month you are liable to find them there. Also, the Honolulu Lounge Lizards. They are known to frequent the kanikapila, also. If you go to Kani Ka Pila Grille at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, you just never know who might pop up in addition to the scheduled official musicians. It is definitely the place to be! |

Rik, Of course on the Big Island you want to try to find Don Kaulia, and any of the Lim family. Darlene Ahuna sometimes plays n Keahou (Beach Resort). Also, if you're lucky, you might catch Brother Smitty, although I don't know for sure that he's always around; I stumbled on him and Sonny Lim doing an impromptu gig at a joint in Waimea. Last year, I tried but I couldn't connect with anybody other than JK, but I know you have him already (no one was where everyone said they'd be). Konabob is probably your best bet on where they'll be at the time. |

Thanks Terry (chunk-monk)I don't have Don Kaulia's...do you where on Big Island he is? I already have Darlene Ahunas', Sonny Lim, Brudda Smitty,(plus JK's).
Thanks WCERTO - I'll go check out the Bishop Museum Kanikapila, sounds good. I frequent the Kanipila Grill, good venue...I may have a chance to play there during intermission w/ Uncle Kawika

Konabob should know how to contact Don. I think he gave me his phone. Also, I think Don has been on the TP more than once. Andy may know his email. Last year he wasn't playing due to work stuff. He's a cool guy and would probably welcome you finding him. |

I think Wanda means Ben Kaili & he emailed me today saying he's flying in & out of Honolulu on Sunday January 29th so he's hoping to join us at the Bishop Museum Kanikapila. Might have a couple of other Hawaiian music celebrities in the house that day but I don't want to drop names & they don't show. Either way it should be a great day of music. Choke TPers should be in attendance including Kory(Thumbstruck) & Jack(Slipry1) all the way from Seattle!!!
Hey slkho, make sure you get all the "John Hancocks" from the Abrigo Ohana you'll see why when you hear them. They truly are the future of traditional Hawaiian music. |

Yes I meant Ben Kaili. What a yutz I am. My brain is getting frazzled from getting this hula workshop going. Whew! Good thing Duke knows me well enough to know what I mean even when I don't know what I mean. You know what I mean? |

I have a pretty cool autographed small nylon string with all my slacker teachers autographs and those of many friends and other performers on it. It even sounds good too!
