Honey Ho's son Don got his start entertaining at her Honey's Cafe in Kane`ohe http://archives.starbulletin.com/2003/01/16/news/story10.html . The bar and grill at the Ko`olau Golf Course is named in her honor and features her photo prominently among the dozens of artists pictured on the walls.
On Sunday afternoon these days Honey's at Ko`olau hosts the Hawaiian Boy Crew, led by Hawaiian Boy Mike Ka`awa and featuring Analu Aina on bass and vocals, Paul Kim on steel guitar, uke, and vocals, and Ocean Kaowili on guitar and vocals. This band is a complete collection of virtuosi, and their years playing together have given them a cohesive and compelling style all their own. We've been taking the lovely road (part of the old Pali Road, I understand) up to the Ko`olau Golf Course clubhouse for a number of years now, since Auntie Maria called our attention to the scene.
Part of the fun of visiting Honey's is the parade of local talent that joins the Crew for a song or dance. Many local artists live on the windward side and stop in for a number. Visitors from around the world get called up to dance or sing or play, and the HBC gives them a supportive accompaniment every time.
I brought a bag of cameras and a new recorder along on this visit, got permission from the band, and captured much of their show before my camera batteries ran out. Ocean was taking the day off (probably working at his "real" job as a fireman). And unfortunately I did a terrible job of setting the gain on my recorder so the audio portion is a bit clipped, but here are some selections I was able to salvage from the show on January 8, 2012, the first show of the New Year.
Here's Mike doing his powerful arrangement of "Green Rose Hula" with Analu and Paul adding their talents - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIGtCN_LpsE
Paul Kim is a falsetto singer of note in addition to his talents on steel guitar, his "Nani Helena" is chicken skin all the way - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XVl_3of2yIM
And for special guests it doesn't get much more special than the inimitable Danny Lopes. Danny is the author of "A Part of Me, a Part of You (The Hospital Song) and a regular at Hawaiian music shows all around O`ahu. The guys tell me they never rehearse, so this tight arrangement is the result of experience, intuition, and careful listening. Danny leads them from his own song into a medley of old swing tunes and the whole thing is seamless - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJFzaFb7HWA
Honey's at Ko`olau is easy to find, just take H3 to the Kane`ohe exit, turn makai and take the very first left from Kamehameha Highway, immediate left again, and follow the road to the Golf Course. The Hawaiian Boy Crew usually start around 4 PM.

Been there done that -- and even met Wanda/Paul and Fran there at the same time. Ditto on everything Fran said. It is a MUST STOP if you are on Oahu on a Sunday. Then you can go the the polo matches after. |

Ditto what has been said -- always fun at Honey's (and the pupu menu is great). A lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon... |

We took Momi's grandma and auntie there just last week; in addition to many wonderful guests and dancers (Danny Lopes was there again, and we had just seen him at The Willows a few nights earlier), Owana Salazar sat in for a few songs (plus, Mike and Ocean came by the table and fussed over grandma and auntie, those charmers). |
