This week, Pakele Live! with Tony Solis presents a special show starring Jason Poole (the “Accidental Hawaiian Crooner”) and Andy Wang (“Mr. Taropatch”)!
How did Pittsburgh-born, classically trained (he graduated cum laude with a B.F.A. in Vocal Performance from Carnegie Mellon University) singer Jason Poole find himself knee-deep in mud, gutting fish on the remote island of Molokai? Told he'd never sing again after an eating disorder ravaged his vocal cords, and that he'd never walk again without a limp after breaking his hip in a freak accident, Jason proved everyone wrong.
Thanks to the healing powers of Hawaiian music and dance (as well as being as stubborn as a Molokai mule), he wound up being adopted, educated and lovingly whipped into shape by Hawaiian elder and Hālawa Valley resident Pilipo "Pops" Solatorio. Pops told Jason he must share with the world what he's been taught — repertoire from Hawai'i's golden age of song, especially the songs of Molokai. That’s his kuleana (responsibility). In Pops’ words: “This is pertaining to my hānai son, Jason Poole. I call him Iakona. He's been with me for quite some time now. I've always admired this young man. I invited him to join me. I took him in as a son. I took him into my home. In Hawaiian-style, we hānai (adopt) somebody.
“I decided to teach him as much as I can about the culture — whatever he wanted to learn. When I teach, hopefully I reach the spirit of the person. And that's where our communication is — from spirit to spirit.
“I give him my blessing. He can use whatever he has learned from me. And I want him to. It's important to me and it's important to my Hawaiian people. To continue to carry on our culture.
“As a kupuna and as a kumu Hawai'i, I can tell you that Jason is an excellent young man. He is not Hawaiian, but he's sure a Hawaiian at heart.”
So here he is, the “Accidental Hawaiian Crooner,” doing his best to make Hawaiian grandmothers cry with delight when he sings Hawai'i's most beloved songs — once he washes off the mud, of course.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ With family ties to the island of Oʻahu, Andy Wang developed an insatiable love for Hawaiian music and the fingerstyle tradition of kī hōʻalu (slack key guitar.) For many years, he has returned to Hawaii to study with a host of Hawaiian slack key guitar masters including Ozzie Kotani, Keola Beamer, George Kahumoku, Jr. and Raymond Kāne. Andy's Hawaiian name, Kūlana, was given to him by songwriter, hula teacher and Hawaiian cultural authority, Auntie Nona Beamer.
Andy has performed Hawaiian music, solo or with other musicians, at a variety of events and venues in the New York tri-state area and beyond. In 2007, he performed at the 15th Annual Taro Festival in Hana, Maui and opened for the Mākāha Sons and Hōkū Zuttermeister at the Thomas J. Meehan Center for the Performing Arts. In 2010, he was a special guest, joining HAPA in Fall River, MA and New York City. He has provided musical accompaniment for various hula groups, including Hālau Pua Aliʻi ʻIlima O Nuioka (Vicky Holt Takamine).
"I find the nahenahe (gentle) sounds of Hawaiian music to be a pleasant diversion from work." (Andy is a Senior Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Runnymede Capital Management, and earned a BA in International Studies with honors from Trinity College). Andy also co-wrote and performed on Aloha Pāpālua, which appears on Darin Leong's Nā Hōkū Hanohano nominated album 5 Years and Many Miles.
In 2002, Andy founded www.Taropatch.net, the online community dedicated to Hawaiian music and culture. Mentioned in Acoustic guitar magazine, Lonely Planet, and the Honolulu Advertiser, Taropatch.net has become recognized as a valuable resource connecting fans, students and performers of slack key and Hawaiian music from all over the world.
Join host Tony Solis for Pakele Live! on Thursday, January 12 from 6:30-8:30p.m. HST at the Willows Restaurant (901 Hausten St., Honolulu). Those who are unable to attend can watch the live stream at www.pakelelive.com. (The show will also be edited for television and shown at a later date on OC16 TV and www.oc16.tv)
Knock'em dead Andy! No pressure, but I told my relatives to watch, including the ones on the East Coast--if the show is junk I'll get nasty messages for having them stay up late . |
Claudia, mahalo for the update. At first I thought they were just on Hawaiian time, then I tried a couple of refreshes to no avail.
Aloha, Doug |
Mitch, no worries. We all "missed it" since the live feed wasn't working. Hopefully PakeleLive will be able to stream the recorded version soon. Good luck on your upcoming slack key show!
Auē - kala mai! We had problems with our T-1 line thru Hawaiian Tel - I was posting msgs all over Facebook (my page and the Pakele page) and Twitter, but forgot to post here! :( We posted the entire show (raw footage, uncut) Friday night - itʻs on vimeo, in two parts: http://vimeo.com/35046201
Praying that the feed works this week for Uncle Dennis and Stephenʻs CD release party, but I assume weʻll post again on vimeo (or elsewhere) if itʻs still not working... |
Thank you, Lynn. I have not been too vocal here about the show. One, I didn't want to be tooting my own horn at the 'patch. Two, I have an aversion to being on video.
Thanks so much for having us at Pakele! I had a lot of fun and it was great to see you, Pali, D.J. Pratt and crew. Hope people can see that we enjoyed ourselves on the raw footage. It was cool to have the East Coast represented again on the show. |
