This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re hosting a CD release party for Waimaka Helelei, the new album by Dennis Kamakahi and Stephen Inglis. (Hawaiʻi Music Award winner and Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award nominee Patrick Landeza is their guest!)

In the late summer of 2011, legendary Hawaiian composer and slack key guitarist Dennis Kamakahi met with his friend and student Stephen Inglis to go over a few songs. Dennis was to be a guest artist on a solo album by Inglis. After hearing Stephen’s composition Nā Pua O Kalaupapa, the two discovered more and more mutual connections with friends and ʻohana at Kalaupapa. The late composer/activist Bernard Punikaiʻa was a close friend of Dennis and Stephen and two of his songs were chosen to record. Inspired by the theme the album was taking on, Dennis composed two new songs about Kalaupapa. At this point it was clearly no longer a solo record and the duo’s first joint effort, Waimaka Helelei, was born.

Dennis David Kahekilimamaoikalanikeha Kamakahi is a multiple Grammy® Winner, multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Award winner, an inductee into the 2009 Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame, and a former member of the legendary Hawaiian folk music group, the Sons of Hawaii (1974 - 1992). He became well-known during the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970's for his music compositions and has written over 500 songs. Wahine 'Ilikea, Pua Hone, Koke'e, and E Hihiwai some of the Hawaiian classic songs sung and danced to today, were written by him. His music has also been featured in such films as Lilo and Stitch, and the critically acclaimed, award-winning film The Descendants.

Stephen Inglis is recognized as one of the most diverse artists in Hawaii today. Equally at home on the acoustic and electric guitar, the art of ki ho’alu (Hawaiian slack key guitar) has been at the heart of his music in recent years. Stephen’s music has been featured in film and on TV, on Grammy®-nominated and Nā Hōkū Hanohano award-winning albums, and his 2010 album Slackinʻ on Dylan won a Hawaii Music Award. Stephen has also contributed guitar work to albums by renowned artists such as Kenneth Makuakane and has toured with Slack Key Masters Dennis Kamakahi, Ozzie Kotani, Cindy Combs, Makana and Hawaiian music legends the Makaha Sons.

Join host Tony Solis for Pakele Live! on Thursday, January 19 from 6:30-8:30p.m. HST at the Willows Restaurant (901 Hausten St., Honolulu). Those who are unable to attend can watch the live stream at www.pakelelive.com. (The show will also be edited for television and shown at a later date on OC16 TV and www.oc16.tv)

Admission is free and all ages are welcome. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. (Doors open at 5:30.) Hi Wanda,

The reception is very choppy, with intermittent pauses every few seconds. It's basically unwatchable for me--too bad because it should be a great show. Patrick is on now, playing with David Kamakahi and Chris Lau. Hopefully they're recording the show so we can watch it later, just like last week's show with Jason Poole and that slick slack key guy from New Jersey.

Aloha,
Doug

GAAAAA! Kala mai AGAIN!!! We thought weʻd found a work-around to the Hawaiian Tel problem, but... *sigh*... And yeh, weʻll be posting the raw footage again - all the principle players gave us permission to do it - but Pali had to fly off to CA tonight, so it prolly wonʻt be posted till next week sometime. (We havenʻt yet heard when Oceanic Time Warner will install the cable line...) Sooo frustrating... :(

Well, I was disappointed but at least I took naps yesterday so I could stay awake. Otherwise, I am a 10 pm beddy-bye person. I'll be happy to watch the raw footage anyhow. I takes my music any way I can. I am sure it was a fun time but I am not sure about that stick in the mud Patrick Landeza. Hahaha. The engergizer bunny.

Confession time -

We were at the show. In fact, we've been on O`ahu for a little over a week, but we only told a handful of people, because we are always so busy with family obligations that we can't spend as much time as we'd like seeing everybody we want to see! (Plus, I was laid out with abdominal pain - likely a return of kidney stones - and high fever for our first few days, which made everything even tighter.)

We did get to see noeau & the lovely mrs. at this Willows show, but thumbstruck & slipry1, sorry we didn't tell you, knowing what time would be like. We head back to snowless Seattle tomorrow morning.

Wanda, be sure to watch the video of this show - there were a couple song dedications to you and Paul!

Aloha, O`ahu - a hui hou. =Retro=

Folks knew you were there. When Lynn posted on Facebook thanks to Lori & Gregg for the Trader Joe's goodies, what other Lori & Gregg could there be?

Glad you are feeling better.
