Apologies in advance if this is opening up a can of worms. I was just thinking that with all the noise over the Hawaiian Music category over the past few years, perhaps this gives additional perspective. Speaking for myself, I am still hoping "Hawaiian" wins.

...and it's a good mix of genres here. From Pop to Rap, Rock to Soul, many artists have had thriving careers & critical acclaim without receiving a statue from their peers.
But what does that say about anything? We've hashed through our personal interpretations repeatedly, and we will do so again.
Artists don't create their art just so they can win awards - but it's certainly nice to receive peer recognition anyway. The people who get most upset about how the process works are those who aren't even part of the process: music lovers who are knowledgeable and passionate about what they like (and don't like). I see nothing wrong with that.
It's when people spend their energy insulting artists they don't know, simply because their preferred favorites didn't win an award, that I get disturbed. It's a misguided waste of passion.
(The Monkees never took home a Grammy, and I still like their recordings. They are one of the best examples of corporate music-biz manipulation of popular tastes, and they didn't win squat - assuming you don't count when Michael Nesmith won the first-ever Grammy for Music Video of the Year in 1981, for his innovative "Elephant Parts." I wouldn't have included them on the list above, though, as they were not "incredibly influential," but they were certainly commercially successful - and they still didn't take home any little gold gramophones. It ain't always about "who you know" or "how to play the system.")
(Worms don't belong in cans anyway.) |

While we are having fun with lists, here (http://www.spin.com/gallery/award-tour-21-times-grammys-saluted-underground), SPIN Magazine points out 21 examples where the Grammy Awards celebrated the underground, the alternative, the independent - rather than just the big corporate music machine.
1975: David Bowie presents an award to Aretha Franklin… and she totally snubs him 1979: Elvis Costello nominated for Best New Artist 1984: Lester Bangs nominated for Best Album Notes for the Fugs' 'Greatest Hits' 1984: Robert Rauschenberg helps Talking Heads win their first Grammy 1987: Beastie Boys act like a$$holes 1990: The most alt-leaning Best New Artist nominees ever! (Soul II Soul, Tone Loc, Neneh Cherry, Indigo Girls. Sadly, they went with Milli Vanilli.) 1991: Sinead O'Connor wins the first Alternative Album Grammy, beating the Replacements 1992: REM beats out Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Dire Straits and Garth Brooks for Best Short Form Video 1993: Nine Inch Nails says "fist f**k" in a song, win a Grammy for it 1993: Arrested Development win Best New Artist 1995: Rollins Band play "Liar" in tuxes 1996: Pearl Jam do their weird non-acceptance speech 1997: The Fugees defeat 2Pac for Best Rap Album 1998: Skeleton Key nominated for Best Recording Package 1998: Los Fabulosos Cadillacs win the first Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album award 2003: Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen, Little Steven, and Elvis Costello perform “London Calling” as a Clash tribute 2005: Basement Jaxx win Best Dance/Electronica Album 2005: Arcade Fire nominated for their first Grammy 2008: Feist's "1, 2, 3, 4" nominated for Best Solo Pop Performance 2009: Radiohead play with the USC Marching band 2011: Oh No Ono nominated for Best Record Packaging |

How can Talking heads be on the "never won a Grammy list" and also on the other list as "1984: Robert Rauschenberg helps Talking Heads win their first Grammy??"
Some lists are more equal than others, right?

The band never won a Grammy. The headline was inaccurate: Robert Rauschenberg won the Grammy for Best Album Packaging in 1984 for his work on the limited-edition version of Talking Heads "Speaking in Tongues." |

Acceptance by friends and family is more to be desired. They accept you inspite of your flaws and quirks. Strangers only know what is marketed, they don't really know you at all. |

Fame don't matter. The question is, are you "incredibly influential?" And for the right reasons, nyuk nyuk nyuk ... |

That is what we desperately want to believe about the artists we admire. But then there is the following from Jeff Beck's Facebook page last night:
Didn't win a Grammy. I'll have to get started on next year.
He won the previous year for "Best Rock Instrumental Performance" for (what I personally thought was a career high achievement) "Emotion & Commotion." I guess he thought he was going to win one every year? |
