Still subject to what can fit in the overhead. Good thing Paul got one of those Voyage-aire guitars that fold up. Of course, it does not sound as good as the Taylor, but at least it is safe and I don't get wanged on the head.

One of the operative phrases is: quote: Any instrument that can be safely stored in the overhead compartment or underneath the seat may be brought on board as carry-on luggage.
For most airlines the dimensions of a carry on that meets this requirement MUST be less than 9"x13"x22". I nearly bought a Voyage-Aire Guitar myself but it exceeds those dimensions and can therefore be refused on-board, even with the new Regs. (Of course even a carry-on less than 9x13x22 can be refused if the flight crew thinks all the carry-on spaces are full, or they are "just having a bad day", and the new Regs do not change that situation either )

I have a voyage-aire. On one Hawaiian Airlines trip, it wouldn't fit in the inboard overhead. Maybe an older plane? At the time, the attendents were less than sympathetic about there not being room. I eventually scrounged an outboard place in 1st class where it did fit. It's always a crapshoot, even with stuff made to go there. Best bet is get a seat where you can get on the earliest. |

I imagine people w/ Uke's don't have much of a problem, (or harmonica players)...I've been relatively lucky w/ my guitars...that whole 'last luggage on, first luggage off" thingy. As long as I have a bullet-proof case, they handle average bumpy handling from cargo loading people. The only two things that ever concerned me was the nervous uncertainity of their condition while in travel, and how most airports don't match luggage tickets to the stubs they issue out to people carrying musical instrutments, it's like anyone can simply walk out the airport terminal w/ your stuff and nobody checks!!! ugh! & yikes!! Think I'll invent 'guitar Lo-Jack' or something. ~slkho |
