I'm Co-Director of the Redwood Mountain Faire, taking place on June 2,3 at Roaring Camp in Felton, CA. It is a huge fundraiser for local non-profits. So here's where I need help. We're holding a fundraiser for start-up funds at a really nice local restaurant, named Scopazzi's in Boulder Creek. The theme is "Swingtime in Honolulu". Island Breeze will be playing both Swing and Hawaiian, we'll all pretend we're at a nightclub in Waikiki araound 1940, swinging the night away under the palms. I may even park my 1940 Chevy in the front parking lot, along with some other car nuts.
Now I'm looking for an image that I can use for posters and handbills and such, and I'm looking for an image of people dancing, with palms in the background, maybe the Royal Hawaiian in the back. Best if it is in the Art Deco style, or something old style. Of course, I am sensitive to ownership issues, and hope to find something that is not copyright protected.
Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers!

Julie, on facebook Jeffrey Apaka, son of Alfred Apaka has started a page called "Waikiki & Honolulu in the 50's & 60's". On that page members post and share photos and stories of that time period. Check it out. I'm sure you could find someone willing to help you out with images. |

I go to www.sxc.hu for images sometimes. Not sure if you will find a suitable image for your purpose but you can search "Hawaii" and see what comes up. |

This is probably not much help, but hanging on some of the walls at the Filoli Mansion are exactly the posters you want. These were advertising posters made by the Matson shipping company. These were the first people to popularize the idea of going to Hawaii for vacation via a Cruise Ship (before commercial aviation got there), and the posters were made at the Height of the Art Deco period. They also have the Art Deco china settings used on the Cruise Ships, etc, etc.
As you know, Filoli is "just down the hill" from you (and a bit north - just south of the Crystal Springs Reservoir). I am not sure they have poster reprints available or not and I doubt that you can take your camera and take a picture of them either. It would be a long drive to come up empty handed. If copyrighted in 1930, the rights would expire in 2002 if not renewed, so there MAY be some posters that you could use (somewhere).
