This week on Pakele Live! with Tony Solis we’re hosting a fundraiser for the Festival of Hawaiian Arts in Paris (http://www.festivalartsdhawaii.com/index.html), featuring Taimane Gardner, Cyril Pahinui, and more!
Organized by the Association France-Hawai'i, the 15 day Festival takes place June 20 to July 7, 2012, and will feature the history and culture of Hawaiʻi through concerts, hula and a variety of special talks and workshops. Taimane and Cyril will be among the featured performers at both the Festival and our fundraiser.
Taimane picked up her first ʻukulele at the age of five and began her future in performing. She was later discovered by legendary Hawaiian crooner Don Ho, and soon became a featured performer in his show. From there her popularity grew. Taimane’s playing style is unique. She has the ability to morph genres—from classical to classic rock to flamenco—always without missing a beat, literally, and she also writes her own songs. Taimane has performed in many parts of the world and has played privately for John Travolta, Steven Seagal, George Clooney, Toyota, Pepsi, IBM and at international film festivals. She has opened for Chris Isaak, Chicago, Jimmy Buffett, Konishiki, Cecilio and Kapono, and Na Leo.
The son of musical legend Gabby Pahinui, Cyril Pahinui is, in his own right, one of Hawai‘i’s most gifted guitarists and singers. He has twice played at Carnegie Hall, and has contributed to three Grammy© Award-winning albums, received several Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, and recorded on more than 35 Hawaiian musical releases. As a slack key guitarist (and teacher of same), Cyril’s technical virtuosity, rhythmic adaptations, and instrumental harmonics impart the soul of Hawaiian music, and his beautiful, emotive, and well-recognized voice renders an intimate picture of his Pacific island home.
Also performing will be Patricia Lei Murray, Kumu Hula Frank Akima and Sandra Kilohana Silve, and several of Kilohanaʻs hula students from France.
Patricia Lei Murrayʻs book I Choose You, will be available for purchase during the Pakele Live! show. The book follows La’i and her Aunty Ku’u on a trip to Paris as they explore the city and learn new things while sharing their own songs and hula with a French hālau.

Unfortunately, it looks like the live feed is not working (as of 7:15P Hawaii time). Bummer, because it should be a great show. |

Our apologies - our internet connection seemed fine and it said we were streaming, but obviously we werenʻt. Weʻll post the show in its entirety once Pali returns from Japan and can get it uploaded - Iʻll provide a link once I have it! |
